Would you use a Sharlin...

*secret Goldenthroner handshake*

So using the other ships as a distraction i would look at the following - Tinashi, or even some Leshath or Teshlan

*we have a handshake now... damn, I must have missed that meeting!*

You think you have it bad, no-one tells me abut ANY of the meetings :p

I think a pair of Tinashis (or even a Tinashi and two Tigaras) would do better. Maybe it's my bad experience of Tinashis (I HATE them) but when I played them last (SFOS) they were a fair bit more dangerous than the Sharlins IMO anyway.

does the sharlin live up to its title? Does it have a little psychological effect? I think its a good ship with the nasty psych-out fluff, that new and even veteran players fall for.

"Lucky crits" are not really as lucky as people make out, if you maximize your chances to beat stealth, maximize your number of hits, you are bound to get a fair few crits and at least some of them would be good ones.

2nd turn 6-6 crit against sharlin IS IMO very lucky. If that wouldn't be that lucky then there's not really point of playing big ships as they would requlary get crippled in the first salvo against them...And that's not really the case now is it?-)

The Sharlin carried on fighting relatively unhindered after that for 5 turns. If the 6-6 had come on turn 5 then would you say it was so lucky? The number of hits being inflicted meant there were quite a lot of crits. Its not a statistical anomoly that one of those would be a 6-6.

Whats the differenence if it happens on turn 2 or turn 5?

Correct, there is not a lot of point playing big ships in a battle like this. The fact is a couple of crits, whether you call them "lucky" or "statistically likely", can easily destroy your big ship. You put all your eggs in one basket and most times a "lucky crit" will take you out.

Well if memory serves well ship doesn't work as well as it used to do when it is crippled. Less than maximum performance practically all game generally has an impact.

Not to mention getting 6-6 crit is not quaranteed during the game to begin with(4 games for me so far in short order and 1 6-6. And that's with bloody lot of precise weapons tossing around) so getting it isn't that likely either. Lesser crits yes but not one that causes 4d6 damage(doubled if it was from heavy lasers). That takes ship long way to destruction.

Well its 1 in 36 for each crit, obviously.

Also 1 in 36 of getting a 4-6 (no weapons may fire).
1 in 36 of getting 4-4 (all weapons need 4+ to fire).
3 in 36 of getting 0 speed, no special actions.
1 in 36 of getting 6-5 which is just as bad as 6-6.

So each crit has a 7 in 36 chance of being a really good one, and thats not even including losing random weapon arcs and losing special orders.

Get 5 crits, and you've got a 2/3 chance of getting one of these "lucky" crits. Get 10 crits and you've a 90% chance of getting a really good one.

A single big crit can have a really bad effect on fleets built around a single large ship. The worst crit is the 4-6 one, IMHO.

Some ships can quite happily continue fighting with some of the other crits, bigger ships in the middle of the battle field can other keep fighting with 0 speed.

Some ships are almost completely unaffected by crippling: Nova for example.

6-5 and 6-6 crits can also be soaked by ships like the Bin'Tak and Octurion.

But the best form of crit restance is multiple ships.

of course we all know statistics goes out of the window with crits, as most players will tell you, that amazing 1-1, or 1-2 crit shows up FAR more often than it has any right to do ;-)

I had a G'Quan take 16 crits in one game, It was sat stationary, unable to fire any weapons, but it actually lasted till the end of the game, denying VP's to an enemy. What a marvellous ship it was.
