The Christmas Chtulhu has bells on the end of his feelers as well as the hat. I thought it looked crap so made my own. That it is to say, my sister made the hat, I just decide when it's time for him to wear it. Proper division of labour, I think... :wink:

The link says 1/1800. So somewhat larger than 1/2400 and considerably larger than 1/3000 but smaller than 1/1200. For plastic miniatures not a bad scale at all.
I really like the Whizzkids pirate ships and would rather like to see a more modern version though I must admit it is predreadnoughts that push my buttons. ACW is pretty attractive as well. The problem is that after the RJW things start to get a little boring appearance wise though I do have a soft spot for those long sleek IJN cruisers.

Okay, first of all the new Axis and Allies War at Sea game is being released by Hasbro. It has nothing to do with Whizkids at all.
The ships appear to be nice but I haven't seen any close ups of them yet. I'm a little concerned about the large scale. Judging from past releases by Hasbro I wouldn't put it past them to have no consistant scale at all. I have a sneaking suspicion that all the battleships will be roughly the same size and they won't be in scale with the crusiers or destroyers either.
I fear this will once again hurt the game as most serious minded wargamers will shy away regardless of the paint jobs. However, I'll reserve my opinion unitl I see more of the minis.

I am not mixing them up (Whizzkids and Hasbro/WotC/Avalon Hill) but I do lump them together in the same category and thus regard them as worthy of comparison. I think that Whizzkids might have done a better job of the rules of such a game though with the terror weapon that is the firepot (or whatever the horrible thing is called) I am not so sure.
Early reviews of the new Star Wars game from Hasbro make me expect the worst from their new WW II game. The miniatures scale is all over the place [1] and their quality is very variable though as someone did point out they are gaming pieces not miniatures but of more concern is the fact that the rules are very simple. I do not know though how they design things, does the same team work on all their rules? I suppose though that the Star Wars game has a younger or at least simpler target audience (which looks to me like a bit of a sneer at Star Wars fans).
I cannot see the rules as a competitor to War at Sea, it is like comparing a Farley's rusk with Patum Peperium [2]. Both have their place but you do not have the same market for both.
I think I would prefer metal miniatures in a standard scale as well but as I do not have anything suitable I will have to check the reviews. I have some old Navwar moderns (well they were in the 1980s) and am not impressed with them. I did like the 1/6000th scale ships, tiny as they were, but they were sold and the prices became silly. A bad scale for small craft as well but that really needs a separate rule set – probably one by David Manley!

1. It is traditional for aircraft to be a larger scale than ships and to be represented by fewer miniatures as well – otherwise you might need a microscope to see them and this carries through to starship combat games as well – a certain game by Mongoose themselves comes to mind as an excellent example of this.
2. Look it up then go and buy some. You will either love it or hate it and if you love it you will probably not have to share it.

My 1/2400 80' Elco MTBs from GHQ measure a little over 3/8", or about 10mm long. I had to mount them on 1/2" x 1" bases so I wouldn't lose them, so any ship scale under 1/2400 that wanted to make use of MTBs would be better off to use trained fleas :wink: .

Imagine trying to collect early war germans, and opening a box full of soviets, 1940's French, and yanks witrh bazookas. Great!
'sides, there's billions of much better looking and much more varied ww2 mini's already available in every scale you can imagine. No use for some poorly scaled lumps of plastic that were machine painted, or handpainted by chinese slave labour or wherever its cheap these days.
