Why use pornography?

Mongoose
I had considered purchasing the Conan RPG as I loved the Conan movies but I was great disappointed when I saw the previews.

Is it really necessary to have a bare breasted woman on every even page?

I am sorry to say but this will factor into my buying decision and at the moment I will not be purchasing this product.

This also raises the question on if I should be purchasing any products from Mongoose in the future.

It is sad that you consider a bare breast pornagraphy...

Perhaps had you read any of the original stories with the Frazetta covers you might understand...

yup,i'm with you on that.I'm a little dissapointed that there isnt a FRAZETTA classic on the cover.
Ghoti,if you have read any of the books you will know that gratuitous violence and implied nudity are staple parts of the tales.I do not think that this game is in any way politically correct. If you want PC you should probably try elsewhere.Howards tales contained thinly veiled racism that were a product of his time and background.
Also if you wont purchase this on the strength of a drawing of some bare breasts then I suspect that you adhere to the principle of political correctness gone mad.

Nice to see these comments are from "guest"... ashamed to let us know who you are?

As for you comment, I am aware of this but as you said, the books contained "implied nudity".

What they chose to do, is not implied nudity and it is on every even page, or so I can assume by the previews.

This is gratutious and unnecessary. I do not believe that it can even be labeled D20 with the new rules on that.

This is not being PC, this is called being an adult. This will only appeal to those with juvenile tastes.

Hi there,

I wouldn't consider a nude drawing to be pornography. Specially not under this context. Neither I think Mongoose are showing a nude female breast to sell Conan to teenagers. The world of Conan by Robert E. Howard is a dark and savage land ruled by primal principles defended with steel and blood. I think Mongoose is trying to keep the spirit of Howard here. If this is not appealing to you, fair enough: your choice. Personally I'm going to buy it.

On another point: I would like a better Illustration for the portrait. Without judge the technique of the artist I can honestly say it has not the spirit of Conan's world. I would like to see something with the strength of Frazetta or Bisley.

Regards,

Lobogris

Thats a rather weak comment to imply that someone is ashamed because they are 'Guest' vs 'Conanfan4life!!1!1' We are posters from across the world. A username is a username and no different from another.

You may or may not have had a point with your first post. I stopped reading after 'I had considered purchasing the Conan RPG as I loved the Conan movies but...'

In case you didn't notice, 'Conan the Barbarian' had nudity in it. Or did you close your eyes during those scenes?

I find it interesting that you were looking forward to roleplaying violence and murder, but you were turned off by the sight of a few breasts.

And just to clarify, the nudity in Howard's stories was not implied, it was there in plain black and white.

Well, I must say that I enjoyed the girl picture, specially from her nudity!
In fact pornography rather takes a point in showing people in sexual behavour; this is only an slightly erotic image, not pornography at all. And, yes, REH stories include girls, (besides alcool and murder), and Conan films too. The girl with "poetry of Khitai and phylosophy of Som", the witch ("this has a price, barbarian"), and a lot of people in the orgy scene ("so that's paradise!").
Don't turn a girl without shirt in pornography, please!!!

Adult, eh? Coming from a bloke titling himself 'Mercenary of the Mandarin Chicken'...

I for one am glad to see an alternative to the mass of PC games on the market. I love Howards world because it is not PC and I'm glad to see that Mongoose have had the courage to reflect this with the CONAN RPG product. If you portrayed Howards world in any other way the product would most likely be a flop.

This game contains references to human sacrifice and canabalism to name but two. To moan about naked 'drawings' in light of this shows a mixed up list of priorites.

I have no time for parrots...

No, but it was all in context, part of the story, as it is in the book and comics.

To just put a picture of a bare breasted woman on every even page, that would be about 176 pages for no other reason than they can seems a bit much to me.

I have no problem when it fits the store or is in context, but to use it as a banner seems a bit much.

Where is mongoose in all of this? Are they afraid to respond?

I see.
In the Conan novels it's OK because it's in context.
In the Conan comics it's OK because it's in context.
In the Conan movies it's OK because it's in context.
Then there is a Conan game and suddenly it's not in context.

Sorry but IMO your opinion on this topic is a complete nonsense. It doesn't withstand a minimal logical analysis.

Eroticism (not pornography and there's a HUGE difference beween the two terms) is an integral and essential part of the Conan fantasy, as is violence. Ignore these two components and the Conan mythos means nothing (as in the second movie, the TV series and the cartoon).

I agree with you Aker in that this topic is complete nonsense, sorry Ghoti.

OK,So I appear to have kicked off a bit of a hooha here.Well then Ghoti,I dont have a user name as I rarely post on these boards and as guest posts are accepted I just use them.
I am most certainly not ashamed to let you know who I am,my name is Paul and I have the honour to be an Irishman.
I too am an adult and frankly I find images of naked people not to be a problem. It is after all our natural state and clothing is an aberration which will probably eventually disappear with climate changes and the continued evolution of our race.
The only thing which offends me about the ladies breasts in the previews is that they are not drawn better. However even if they remain as they are I will still be purchasing the book.

Given the subject material and the vivid descriptions that Howard placed in his Conan stories, it seems to me that the inclusion of both nudity and violence in the artwork only re-enforces the nature of the source material.

It does seem to be a common dichotomy amongst gamers that the prospect of role-playing money-grabbing murderers appeals but the mere sight of the naked female body is met with horror and disgust. "Gadzooks, natural beauty! I shall stick with killing orcs for their treasure, thanks!"

P.S. I am not Paul

To be honest, we are fairly speechless. . .

heh I had much the same response.. I read the first message and was fairly dumb struck as to what to say in reply.

though I would say this now having had the liberty of some time to carefully consider a response to the original posters message.
If in todays society we can have topless beaches, mothers breast feeding in public, topless women in our daily newspapers and so forth... then I'm certain a few appropriately placed and very much "In themed" nubile semi-nekkid chicks in conanesque style pictures is not going to corrupt or distress anyone but the most closed minded and conservative of people.
And to those people i would say if this book because of the occasional illustrated bare breasted lady gives you cause for distress do not buy the book as something such as this which is commonly associated with not only the books but more importantly the character himself Conan, who is afterall only a fairly loved up lug of a barbarian would no doubt further add to your distress... better to stick to the non fiction side of the bookstore and avoid anything which may cause undue upset, and I do not mean that sarcastically but RPG's that portray a few naked breast causing you upset would likely pale into comparison the first combat you had as that would deal with the morality of life and death itself!

Where is mongoose in all of this? Are they afraid to respond?

I imagine they are stupefied by the cloistered attitude you show. You aren't a monk by any chance are you?
