Trying to work out a limit on the types of ships you can field in a single 8FAP Battle Fleet

This is same type of ship not including variants.

Ship Level: Number Allowed:
Armageddon 2
War 3
Battle 4
Raid 6
Skirmish 8
Patrol 12

Comments?

have you tried that for races that don't want to actually buy their battle level hull/don't have one above that? And are you using the new or old FAP break downs?

Just got the Cosmographer.

Even if it does only have a limited number of planet variants and I couldn't use a starfield backround it looks fine so far. Mhm, hopefully it won't take too long to get into using it.

Well down Cosmographer Sector Map.
Do you perhaps have a tutorial or somie hints how to make a good map?

In most cases less is more, it is too easy to clutter up a map. It is also worth using the layers, so you can easily add or remove data from the display at the click of button. The benefit of the cosmographer is that it is simple to use.

I'm in the process of attempting v0.2. I took a standard sector, deleted it zoomed out a touch and re-drew a larger hex grid (I'm currently trying with 30x40). Some of the symbols are colour colour variable - look for the little + sign in the top left corner.

However it is worth getting the Tome of Ultimate Mapping if you want to learn how to use the rest of the package to its full ability.

How doest he system of layers work? By know I place the symbols I want and that's it. I never got to using the system, at least in CC3 as I thought it as too difficult.

They work much the same way as photoshop. There should be a a block in the top right of the screen that has colour, width/size and layer. If you click on the layer bit, it will open up the table of available layers, and from there you can select what layer you an to draw in, show / hide others and freeze layers you do not want to edit accidentally.

Basically a layer is a separate entity of the drawing that can be turned on or off. You can draw different things in each layer.

What you may have is:
Background layer - eg. hex grid
Planets layer - eg. worlds and their names
Jump routes - the jump gate network
GM Stuff - things you don't want your players to know. e.g that secret raider base.

If you do find you have placed objects in the wrong layer, there are tools that allow you to move them about.

Map based campaigns can be great. Strategic concerns determine when/where/how much as far as forces to be deployed, one may be doing well in one place and getting stomped in another. The big obstacle to be overcome is making the campaign system complex enough to be interesting yet not so overcomplicated as to be more annoying than useful.

ok didnt quite understand the first bit ,wither i very tired or just not reading it right, or both!

Currently using FAP from fleet book but i cant see any problem with using either with the campaign rules that are being devised!

I'm guessing thats another YES vote then!

Have you actually read the rules yet David, cause there are plenty of option or alternative rules going in there and some which arnt in v1.2 like galactic event chart and rules for capturing B5!

Just tried it out.

How can I delete a hex grid from a map? I just can select the predefined samples.

You'll probably find there are frozen layers involved. You'll need to unfreeze the layers to be able to delete them (access the layers table and look for boxes with a 'F' in them - click to un-freeze). Once you have done this it's then a case of using the delete tool, selecting the lot of them, right-clicking and Do It.

Talk about thread derailment. :)

I've sent you an revised copy of the map. It should print out properly on A4 paper now.
  • The jump routes have been pushed to the back so they are now behind the hex grid so are less overwhelming.
The colour key broadly follows that in Mongooses Galactic Guide.
Capital Worlds are noted in capital letters.
I'm not too happy with the positioning of the right hand empires (Centauri/Minbari) as they seem a bit stretched, while the left hand ones (League/Narn) are a bit squashed.
If people are downloading it, please let me now if there is anything missing or in need of revising.

@Tolwyn, if you PM me with your e-mail address, I'll send you the CC2 map file I have been using.

All i can say when looking at it is Fing brilliant!!!!!!!!

agree with you on the righthand side of map, everything to right of following seems stretched out to far:
Quad 17, immolan, tarellan + minbar + Norsa
Draw a line down along those and everything on the right is stretched out!

have uploaded as of now so ppl can have a look see!

If we go ahead and use your map i might have to make a basic revision on ship movement, yours is a lot more spaced out than my map was!

I am NOT happy right now!

WORD decides to do something funny and says i cant back up my document??

Then it vanishes from the main folder i got it saved in!

So everything i have altered and added since 7pm last night is gone!

least i got that as a back up!!!

just over 3 pages of work GONE!

OK now that i have managed to replace most if not all of the data that i lost i am now down to the final stages of filling in certain areas of rules which arnt exactly covered in the main rule book.

This is one, the number of ships allowed upon a planet, what do people think?

Number of Ships/Fighters Allowed in Atmosphere:
Due to physical limitations of what space is available upon a Planet Template the following is a set of rules, stating how many Fighter Flights and ships are allowed within a Planets atmosphere at any given time. These restrictions are not Planet based, but are in fact Player based. So each Player is allowed 7 Fighter Flights and 3 Ships on a small 3” Planet. The Planet Template will not allow this many Fighter Flights and ships to be placed upon them, it is strongly recommended that you move Ships and Fighters that have moved onto the Planet to one side of the battlefield (preferably an empty part of the table), and from there keep track of what is going on.

Planet Size: Fighters: Ships:
3” 7, 3
6” 19, 7
10” 61, 15

The fighters are what you can physically fit onto the planet template!
