Where do you come from?

Hey all!

Im just curious about where you all come from and when you started playing Conan.

I´ll start with myself.

I live in Sweden, in a rather small city called Norrkoping. I just started playing Conan although Ive been playing RPGs for almost 17 years now, on and off. The games me and my friends gather around are mostly the following: Vampire the Masquerade, Marvel Super Heroes and Star Wars (D6).

Hey, I'm from Prescott Arizona. I've been gaming off and on since 1980. I've only recently ran a Conan game, however.

I was born in Enkopping, Sweden. Is that near you?

Nice! So, your parents lived in Sweden before?
Not really close. Enköping is 2-3 of hours from where I live.

I'm from Germany, and I love Scandinavia. I also speak some Norwegian and Swedish, but it's a bit rusty. Haven't been up there for years, unfortunately, either I have no time or no money.

I picked up RPGs around '93 or so, and have concentrated on Conan for over a year now.

Deutschland, too, like Clovenhoof! I am 37 and on the gaming front since the 6th of December 1983 - and still gaming with (almost) the same crew! I am a midel-school teacher (Hauptschullehrer) in North-Rhine Westphalia in a small town in the Ruhr Area. I own more rpg-games than I care to count, played less and still buy more and more and more, making Sigmar from Highlander Games in Bochum happy as punch and bringing his kids through college someday.

Well, and here is the German translation of the Jabberwocky quote:

Right now, my gaming crew finished the pictland campaign (Across Thunder River) and solved the mystery of the "Heretic of Trarantia". All are level 4 to 8 by now - depending on who could be there for gaming, we ain't students any more. :wink:

Are Conan fans older than usual roleplayers or is the hobby just getting more mature in general? Guess I'm junior in this bunch - 26, Finland, been playing for 12 years or so. The first games were Rolemaster and Cyberpunk. I started running Conan two years ago or so, though I've been great fan of Robert E. Howard since I was 13 or so and read his stories for the first time. I guess you could call me a purist, since I've never given much value for pastiches and only consider Howard's work as guidelines when I describe my version of the Hyborian Age to the players.

My turn, then...
I live (and was born) in Marseille, in sweet southern France. I'll be 43 in a couple of weeks and I got a lovely (but fierce!) 7 years old little barbarian called Dorian. Hmmm... It seems that's making me the old timer again!

I currently run a gaming shop and been into gaming for nearly 30 years with some 20 years as pro (wow... can't believe so much time has passed!). I've been hooked into Conan and REH since I was a kid (got a pocket copy of "The Dark Man" when I was about 10 and I remember being scared to death by "The Pigeons of Hell" story!). Next were the Conan comics, then I discovered role playing games. It was to late to turn back.

With my playgroup we have a couple of running campaigns at the moment: Conan, Cthulhu, Cops, 7th Sea and a homebrew campaign set in a zombie infested Marseille. We have a lot of fun with this one, as we're changing GMs from one session to another so everyone can give his view of the catastrophe. Of course, characters are quite short lived in such a campaign... I also plan to launch a Solomon Kane campaign as soon as I can get myself a second life...

I also play boardgames and CCGs (L5R and VTES in particular) and we do about two or three live action RPGs per year (where we play wild long haired barbarians, of course...). I (try to) play guitar and I'm much into rock music (what else?) and support the best soccer team of all times, l'Olympique de Marseille. ALLEZ L'OM !!

And no, I don't play WoW. That's why I got a life...

I live in Portugal, in the south right in the middle of the Algarve. Been playing RPGs for 21 years now. Never a player, always a GM, don't know why though, I guess I much prefer GMing than being a player. Played many RPG systems and been playing Conan ever since it got out. It's currently my favourite RPG and my group's favourite as well.

Been a boardgamer for 10 years as well and I'm more involved in the boardgaming community than in the RPG one. Still enjoy playing them both though.

Yes and yes. I am also active on a German general rpg forum, where the average age seems to be around "late twens". The average Conan player appears to put a few years on top of that.

One hypothesis to explain the general observation would be that the young ones play more rather than talk so much about it, or talk about it at school and not on forums, whereas we "old bags" need to find a different place for our ramblings.

However, it's also an undeniable fact that (at least in Germany, but I guess it's universal) the pen&paper audience has declined a lot in recent years, some say by 90%! The adolescents of today seem to prefer playing trading card games, tabletops, or online games. So the adult generations that grew up with P&P tend to stick with it, but there is very little fresh blood to fill the ranks.

Conan, on top of that, is very much a niche product, because it strikes a very particular nerve, not only due to the literature (which has been published for many decades), but also due to the general butt-kicking overtone which is a wonderful counterpoint to the everyday chores we have to put up with in business life and suchlike.

Accoring to my observations, on various conventions, there seem to be fresh blood added to our hobby every year. At least here in Sweden. But, I agree, alot of the younger guys are more into tabletop or online games. Isnt that how its always been though?

Dying breed? Bleeding perhaps, but not dying...yet. ^^

I'm 31 years old and have been playing RPG's since I was 13 or so (on and off, I should say, as I had a couple of years in there when I mostly played games involving small metal or plastic men :wink: ). In a couple of months me and the misses are having our first baby and, if it's a boy, we have contemplated naming him Howard.

Right now we're not playing any Conan, but I'm instead GM'ing The Enemy Within campaign for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. After that we might get back into Conan, but I would also like to try me some Solomon Kane, and the new Dark Heresy 40K game also looks shiny... (I have much too many games).

Im 25 years old and from Finland. I have played RPGs for 13 years now. I have been here in the Forum for a while, but this is only my second post. I have been so busy reading all the old interesting comments here that I havent had the time to write my own.

I have been entranced by Conan since my first contact in 1992, but Conan as an RPG is relatively new to me as I discovered it just last summer. I have just started to run my first game, a mercenary/adventure/travel campaign.
