Noctum has been inspired by a wide variety of horror movies, games and novels. The main idea is to provide hardcore horror gamers with a rather nasty game universe with diverse variations on the theme. This is achieved by using different styles of play. For example, if your gaming group wish to hunt serial killers the Thriller style would be suitable. A game going more in line with Silent Hill would benefit from the Morose Miroir style, while an Omen-like story would be using the Legions of Hell style. All in all there are nine different styles.
Noctum uses 2D10s when dealing with tests. Roll the dice, add appropriate rank and try to get as high a score as possible. A lot of emphasis is put on automatic success, mostly employing the dice when it adds to the suspense of the gameplay (contests, stress, combat, etc). This system also uses something called Fields of Expertise. This comes quite in handy when looking for clues on a crime scene, when profiling serial killers, deciphering a code or performing similar tasks.
