Only the core rulebook is essential. Really depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. What are you interested in expanding upon?

I agree with what Andrew says... with a few extras. The Traveller core rules are used in different universes.

Some universe books - e.g. Babylon 5 - would be off topic for you. However, the Strontium Dog books might be of interest to you as they both come from the 2000AD stable.

In general, the black Traveller books are regarded as generic and can be used in different universes. If you are in doubt about a particular book, post a message on the forums here and someone will let you know.

Hope this helps :)

Psion would be the book I'd think would be of most use to Dredd, since it greatly expands psychic abilities, something quite prevalent in the JD universe.

Dilletante is also quite useful for ideas regarding the idle rich and bored citizens doing something dumb who often crop up in JD. It also has extensive discussion about drugs.

Agent is of use for the espionage aspect of JD. Most of the special spy equipment there will fit right in for Mega City spies, cat burgulars, assassins and such.

Strontium Dog is one of those unheralded gems in the rpg hobby at the moment - pure anarchic brilliance, and very playable and fun.

I mean i want to get more books for traveller as a setting it self, but could also be used with JD, that is all, I was just wondering what books are vital for running normal traveller.

I just wanted a list, and also ones that could be useful for jd as well... but if none of them are useful for jd it doesn't matter

The main book you already have is the only book you need to play traveller.

All the other 'black with stripe' books - i.e. Books #, Supplement #, and, I believe, Adventure # Traveller books are designed to (in large part) be setting neutral. This means, as several posters have related, they should be usable with the JD setting.

As the initial reply indicated - which of these is best for you is totally dependent on what you intend to play (i.e. Book 3 Scout might be nice for exploration type adventures... vs. Agent which is more applicable to espionage, etc.).

The 3rd Imperium setting books have an illustrated cover - these are Official Traveller Universe (OTU) specific and would probably not fit well with JD (though YMMV).

The Mongoose site also has lots of previews of their Traveller Books found at the bottom of this page under Free Downloads.

Hopefully this helps...

I currently use 3 books when running games.
1. Traveller Core Rulebook
2. Spinward Marches (obviously other GMs would use other universe books)
3. Signs and Portents scenarios or Traveller Compendium 1 book (bit of a luxury) which reprints Signs and Portents articles.

Signs and Portents issues can be downloaded from:-

I'm going to start using these books properly, "soon":-
1. 760 Patrons
2. 1,001 Characters

And I am eagerly awaiting publication of "Traveller Campaign Guide", due out later on in the year. See:-

Hmm... another thought that reccommends Strontium Dog is that the starmaps and aliens in it are technically part of the same 2000AD future history (though quite far ahead in JD's future), should you be looking to warm up Justice-1 and dispense justice to the colonies.

You could even run both games and arrange at some point for your SD agents to jump back in time to the Mega City era. I think Johnny Alpha did this a couple of times for some chin-on-chin action with Joe. (Naturally they'd be deported to the Cursed Earth on sight. Or shot. Or both.)
