True, licensing would be quite a feat and I never had a chance to get the previous Dune RPG. It's possible that WotC/Hasbro is just sitting on the license and keeps others from obtaining it. Even if it would become "free" for offers the cost might be prohibitive.

Even though Dune is scifi I would like to see it using RQ engine because most of the combats (at least in the first book) were melee combats and I think that it captures the feel of the setting better than Traveller. Don't ask why I feel this way, I don't know :)

... or maybe something like War of the Worlds....
That has already been done for BRP/RQIII very thoroughly, and I'd say definitively (The original novel plus another, who's name escapes me at the moment, of Well's space-fantasies). Sadly I have the link on my other Mac, but if anyone is interested I'll fish it out.

I agree about the combats - Dune is quite retro-sci-fi in many ways, because of the Butlerian Jihad. Even though the science is actually pretty convincing, the tone of the story still comes across as more epic fantasy than hard sci-fi. Conversely, Star Wars is actually a pure fantasy narrative that merely uses sci-fi tropes to make it feel sci-fi. It's an interesting contrast.

I don't think that the Dune license has anything to do with Hasbro/WotC now. I think it's purely an issue with the Herbert estate now, going on what I remember after the whole Last Unicorn/WotC fiasco in the earlier part of the decade.

I'll probably continue running a campaign in Glorantha but there are other settings I would like to see. I have a particular fondness for settings where most characters don't have magic.

Swords & Sorcery setting other than Lankhmar. Might dust off my old Thieves World copy.

Long been tempted to run A Song of Ice & Fire in RQ.

Could be tempted by a Swords Against Cthulhu campaign if such a thing existed.

Heh. Getting a license to do Call of Cthulhu based on RQ rules would be mildly ironic....

A Song of Ice and Fire is another license that has previously been done in D20, but might be a popular setting for RQ fans. I do think it's a shame that Conan couldn't be done in RQ rules though - is there any other major license that stands out as a crowd puller? Glorantha still seems the most popular choice though. It's interesting that few people have chosen the Eternal Champion stuff yet....

LOL, agreed! That said grabbing the CoC market is brilliant, as Runequest Conan would do, and a Swords against Cthulhu would grab the Cthulhu Dark Ages and Cthulhu Invictus markets.

But even better is grab the CoC market with the era that came before Conan, before Kull.....the Hyperborean era of Clark Ashton Smith. The prehistoric era of both REH and HPL. RuneQuest would be perfect for it, foul mages, degenerate cults and strange races (Voormis beat Ducks).

Must admit that I hadn't thought of using licensed material though using the Ashton Smith books could be fun. Can't help suspecting though that someone's likely to have tied up the license. Although I tend to prefer MRQ to straight BRP a Swords Against Cthulhu could well look like some sort of land grab if done by Mongoose. I think though if they are prepared either to get a license or to create their own explicitly fantasy world rather than using historical Earth backgrounds and looking like they're trying to free-ride on pre-existing work that it could be a lot of fun.

Interestingly, little love for Lankhmar currently, even though it's the closest thing to Conan we officially have now.

I do think that the success of the Eternal Champion stuff is down to presentation actually. Elric, and co, is such an iconic figure that needs a really stylish (full colour?) book to really do the concepts justice. I remember the basic reason for picking up Stormbringer, way back when was the sheer awesomeness of the cover painting.

I'm the one that voted for Eternal Champion. If done right it would give you Sci-Fi space ships with the Sundred worlds, Historical periods(Post revolutionary France, WWII,etc) with Von Bek, Post appoc with Ulric and Hawkmoon, celtic fantasy with Corum, Planetary adventure like Barsoom with Kane of Old Mars and others with the other incarnations of the eternal champion. The eternal Champion is more than the Elric, Hawkmoon and Corum. That's why I picked it. Would have also voted other for Slaine or a Celtic historical book.

I highly doubt that full-colour will ever return, it's just far too expensive given the print-runs.

Judge Dredd has a full colour interior doesn't it? Then again, it's the Rebellion flagship...

I don't know if the Eternal Champion stuff would be ranked in the same way, but I definitely think the interior design could be better - too much greyscale in the previous releases. Above anything else, the Eternal Champion stuff has to look awesome for people to get into it.

You know, I forgot to put Wraith Recon up in the list (Other!)....any love for it?

Also, any thoughts on the possibility of doing Monkey (Magic)....for RuneQuest rules?

Unless I'm mistaken, I think there's an OpenQuest Monkey in the works.

Hmm, that sounds a bit odd if you say it fast ... :?

It's an interesting idea and if the characters are as powerful as what was hinted about considering Deus Vult characters.

Frankly, I am not too keen on all those really fantastic races in that setting that were taken from D&D 4 (although I am not sure if I have to worry about that). Otherwise I am all for almost any kind of spec ops game :)

Agreed. Personally I think that Mentats in Dune were analogous to court mages.

So, the Dune license has reverted back to Herbert's estate? Then I could see a possibility...

I don't think D101's Monkey game is Openquest (or indeed derived from any version of RQ/BRP) - not unless it has changed an awful lot since the demo game I played in last continuum.

On the other hand, at least based on that demo, it is a very good and fun game to play...

Indeed Monkey is not D100 based, but instead uses its own system that uses playing cards.

The webpage for the game is here http://d101games.co.uk/books/monkey/ and will be updated with all manner of previews once I've finished the last couple of pages of the game. Depending on how quick editing takes, the game should be out Jan/Feb of next year :)

Saying all this I am tempted to do a high kicking kung-fu supernatural game based during the Tang Empire using D100, but fear that I may have been be beaten to it by Alephtar games's Dragon Lines

Going to use my traditional RQ setting that I developed way back in the Avalon Hill RQ days; it's a flexible world, one which has been adapted as well to AD&D, D20 and most recently 4E D&D, but it still feels more comfortable, to me, in RQ than anywhere else.

I've also considered running a RQ historical, set in Carolignian France during the reign of Carolus Magnus himself, fighting off the Moors, but using the bulk of the legendary romances of the period as actual backdrops...thus, Malagigi, Atalantes, Bradamante and others would all be real living characters in this setting.

A third idea would be to do a RQ setting set in mythic mesoamerica, dealing with the Mayan culture at its height of glory. This is another one of my favorite cultures and periods in time (I'd probably set it in teh Yucatan somewhere around 200-350 AD) but would require a bit more footwork to properly get done; I'll have to see how adaptable the system is, especially after the next couple of releases (A&E and MC).

Definitely Tékumel - Empire of the Petal Throne.

Definitely.

Edit: Well, that and Middle Earth.

2nd Edit: and the 3rd Imperium from Traveller.

I am GMing in Glorantha 2nd Age - although I use quite a lot "relaxed" Glorantha, and put things I feel right on it.

I am also player on one group, and we are playing on Glorantha-like world but it is more twisted one.
