What scales do you use?

Ah, okay. so that guy is harsh on Skytrex then ;)

Love the wood decking on your Bismark.

I'd also love to put together a small GHQ fleet, but I know me.. I'd end up buying the whole range and needing a loan ;)

Plus I like the size of 1/3000 a bit better for table size than 1/2400.

I'm sure I'll end up getting some iconic ships in GHQ 1/2400 to have as models.

Yes they are a tad harsh on skytrex, Personally I like the Navwar stuff in 1/3000

I do like the look of the 1/6000 its just a shame it seems a limited range

What's missing in 1:6000??

I've not found anything in the VaS book I can't get hold of.
I've got everything in the RN, KM and Italian lists so far apart form the planes.
Not all painted mind!
But a good £160 worth of tiny metal ships - the subs are awesome!

If it's stuff like Z plan, I don't really have any interest in that stuff so i've not looked.

I've not looked that hard at 1:3000 as the models i have seen just don't look that much nicer than 6000. Maybe I need to sample them.

I'd only get one five point tourney fleet in GHQ - for RN that'd be one QE, two Norfolks and three J's. About £30 - pretty small change when compared to a WAB or even DBA army in 28mm, and only the price of a couple of tanks for 28mm WWII....

I have found that when actually playing it is a bit of a pain to use more than about seven ships, unless using squadrons. I've got a convoy game planned where there will be aload of ships - but just a long line of merchant ducks to be shot up with escort ships assisting and some U-boats doing the shooting.

This is a cheap minis game to get into!

On the planes im prob going to use 1/600 or 1/700 scale and one per base mounted about 2-3" high they should give the appearance of flying above the ships and "closer to the eye" being bigger scale

I wasnt thinking of the ships just in the current VaS book.

Arent GHQ 1/2400 not 1/3000

Yes that's right, as you can see in the picture.. GHQ is 1/2400.

I will probably update the picture with Navwar at somepoint, I'm just focusing on getting other thigns done right now :) and Navwar is slightly harder to get.

GHQ are 1:2400, like I said I've not seen anything in 1:300 that grabs me yet - off to Colours at the weekend so might get some there to sample in the metal.

I use the CAP Aero planes - 1:1250 - they look sweet on a base of three... I pre cast some sea bases and use these.

Obviously got to rebase my observation aircraft now...

What can you not get in 1:6000??
There seems to be loads of WWi, WWII and modern available??

Reading the tournament pack you may not ever need the observation aircraft again.

Cant remember what 1/6000 I couldnt get at the time

I am saddened by the loss of the observation aircraft - never understood why they were in there, or what they were supposed to represent, but liked the little sea planes on sticks!

I'm glad I didn't make all of the ones I needed - now I need to know what to do with twelve Arados....

1/700!!
Me and a mate have just purchased opposing fleets and will soon be putting on a game in the carpark of our local games club!
We really wanted to go smaller but after seeing how cool the waterline 1/700 kits were, we were sold.
It will also be good in the summer when we can play on the lawn with beers.

Well, I got some 1:3000 ships at Colours this weekend.
I can't say I am impressed at all. I got Navwar and MY miniatures. I also ordered the same fleet from Skytrex, but they're mailing them to me.

Both brands seem to suffer from the same problems.
The ships I got were a Warspite, Norfolk and J class Destroyer.

The hull of the QE from both MY and Navwar is not symetrical, the curve shape is different.
There is sinkage on the deck area of both brands, in some places deep pinholes. There's also sinkage and pitting on the hull edges. The finish on the master looks rough as well, so maybe the castings didn't have much chance.
The detail is sketchy and indistinct - although the Navwar QE looks like it might have been reworked recently as it was sharper than a Barham that was in the same box.

I am certainly not inspired to paint them up, they'll need a lot of work just to look presentable. Getting the hull shapes looking reasonable will take a good hour of sanding and reshaping.

Maybe I am used to GHQ and Figurehead in terms of quality, but these are a real let down.

I'm tempted to make my own Warspite just to have a nice looking flagship! My RN 5 point raid fleet only have three ship types in it anyway, QE, Norfolk and JKN.

Can anyone recomend a really nice 1:3000 Warspite??

I'll paint them and take some photos for comparison anyhow, but I'm waiting till the Skytrex stuff arrives in the hope that they are nice..

Lads,

I JIST played my first Victory at Sea game and had a blast! We used the A&A: War at Sea minis (hate the ships but love the scale) and it worked out. I have heard others say they use 1/1800 and was wondering where they find the ships. I can find on-line 1/1200, 1/2400 and 1/6000 but nothing else.

Can you all help me out?

Paul

Did you play on a 4x6 table or larger? Seens like the 1/1800 scale would be awfully crowded on a 4x6. 1/2400 is pushing it sometimes.

I use 1/1800 scale as previously mentioned (A&A minis). We play on a 4x6' surface and it really only gets crowded when the aircraft come out.

However, not sure it is a scale issue so much as how close folks tend to group their ships, but are there going to be ramming rules in the OoB?

I've had several players ask what happens if they ram their own ships when they move the wrong one first and decide they need to cut right through it with their next one...

but I'm waiting till the Skytrex stuff arrives in the hope that they are nice..

It was identical to the Navwar stuff, only the casting was worse with loads of flash from torn moulds.

I've now started on a J class destroyer and QE class master.

I use the figurehead 1/6000 scale mostly, for 10 point war scenarios. The figurehead models are nice, and even though you sacrifice some detail, the sheer number of ships makes up for it.

Persnally between the 1/3000 and 1/6000 I go with the 1/6000 as the detail loss is not that huge, and you can shrink the table size by converting inches to centimeters.

My houserule is to double all the ranges and movement, so as to use a 1"=500 yds ground scale. This really punches up the range illusion with 1/6000 and is quite dramatic
