What real use are escape pods?

I dunno. Space IS famously big...

On a matter of scale...the Sea is famously big. Obviously mostly in 2D and nowhere near the same scale. The point being....in most cases abandoning ship into a rubebr dinghy when you're 1000 miles from land is the measure of last resort. Same would be for anything escape-pod-like in space.

Getting into an escape pod in space isn't like walking into a self-contained hab module and having a nap while waiting to be rescued. It would absolutely incolve a cold sleep pod, fast drug, or whatever else you can manage. you could be out there for a long time, even within a solar system. Could be months!

At Imperial tech levels, survival wouldn't be certain and with regulations, I can see these being essential for even being allowed to use a Class A spaceport. (Put it another way, every port I have docked in wanted to see my passport, the passport of the crew, the ships papers and insurance documents. I can't see this being any different in the imperium).

It could be a hundred years. (See The Lost Fleet book #1 Dauntless by Jack Campbell.

I wonder what shape you'd be in after 100 years in a pod.

Depends on what's in there with you.

And, if the cat wakes up first.
