I've been working on a home brewed write-up for Stargate SG-1. It's far from complete but I could email you a pdf copy if you like. Or figure out somewhere free to host it. So far I have character creation for human and Jaffa with careers, updated skill list, weapons and equipment for both and some basic stuff for the Goa'uld. I'm using a lot of general info from the AEG books and of course the Traveller main rulebook.

If you're willing to send a NON-PDF version as well, I'll happily host it at Freelance Traveller.

Polesotechnic League / Terran Empire (Poul Anderson)
Foundation (Asimov)
Known Space / Ringworld (Larry Niven)

These are all obvious choices, as they all were the forefathers of dear old Traveller. Seconded.

On a very different tone, let me add something I am currently reading (and enjoying): "Space Captain Smith" by Toby Frost.

And I would also like to join the choir of voices inquiring on the fate of the MGT edition of the 2300AD/2320AD universe. Colin? Matt? Anyone? :?:

I would also like to add

Max Headroom (TV show) would make for an interesting world setting

Galaxy Rangers (TV cartoon, Harmony Gold), a bit more high tech then OTU but a fun short lived show

For modern Scifi properties:

  • * Mass Effect would be my first choice by a HUGE margin.
    * Firefly (also very close to Traveller already)
For more classic Scifi properties:

  • * Dune could work very well with Psionics used for Interstellar travel, Bene Gesserit "voice" powers, the "Weirding Way", etc.
    * The Uplift Series (Sundiver, Uplift Wars, etc.) has many, many Travelleresque elements like Psionics and TL discrepancies, as well as tons of aliens and such. It's clearly an influence on CT anyway, like the uplifted dolphins.
    * Foundation would possibly be cool, though frankly that seems more like a "flavor" of Traveller that a real separate setting.

Another one I just though of is the setting for Ground Zero Games' Stargrunt II, Dirtside II and Full Thrust. There's already been a Full Thrust to Traveller conversion. It's already close. Plus, it could lead to enough collaboration to see Traveller based miniatures being made again, in both 25mm and 15mm scales!

It is a great idea indeed! :D

Should we tell Matt and Jon? :)

There's already been some work done on a Dirtside II and Stargrunt II conversion, though to Classic Traveller rather than Mongoose - check out Ken Pick's Striker Zero at Freelance Traveller.

I would like to see Traveller 2300 or 2320 or what ever you want to call it, also I would like to see you obtain the licence to do Battlestar Galatica, Stargate SG-1/SGA, Space Above and Beyond, and Earth II. All were TV shows and would fit well using the Traveller game system.

As as 2300AD goes... Mongoose wants to do it. I still want to do it. Marc wants to do it. It's a matter of finding time, especially given Mongoose's ambitious release schedule, which is actually rather full for some time into the future.

Personally, I'm a bit tired of Old Skool Sci-Fi, so I'd vote for more contemporary stuff:
  • Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds
Takeshi Kovacs Series (Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, etc.) - Richard K. Morgan
Commonwealth or Confederation Saga - Peter F. Hamilton
Culture Universe - Iain M. Banks
None of them are compatible with basic Traveller assumptions, but I think they would make for fascinating alternatives.

Takeshi Kovacs would be a nice fit for an rpg, what with the difference between a fatal wound and real death. Though the ultra-ultra-violence probably wouldn't gel with the 'family friendly' them... :)

Jack McDevitt's SF setting.
Lensman.
Dune might be nice.
How about Space:1889, or a generic steampunk equivalent?

re: Starship Troopers and Alien - just create a "bug hunt" module for Hammer's Slammers and you're done.

re: Firefly - alas, would have been nice. But how about Andre Norton's Solar Queen/Stellar Patrol setting, or Pournelle's Co-Dominium setting, or Elizabeth's Moon's "Familias Regnant", as alternatives?

Keith Laumer's Bolo/Retief.

Also Fading Suns! (Personal bias mind you. I've be working on a Traveller conversion for the last 3 months :-P)
