Hello all !

What is the use the profession skills ?

Example : a pilot only needs Pilot, Operation (piloting) and Knowledge (astrophysics), what is the use of putting points in the Profession (Pilot) skill ?

Basically to determine how much money he earns every week/month (if he works as a freelancer) piloting shuttles , cargo pods and the like .

However , you don´t need to have any ranks in the proffesion skill (pilot) to work as a pilot .

Depends of how the GM decides to make the pilot earn his/her salary .

Really , the profession skill is used to represent in a single die roll how much money a character makes practicing his profession during a certain amount of time without having to bother with details of the character actual job(s) , so if your character works on a regular basis for a comercial space line and earns x credits every month , you shouldn't roll for the profession skill at all .

The Pilot skill means he can fly a shuttle, transport or fighter
The Operations (Piloting) means he work with others and can handle larger craft such as a freighter or EA destroyer
The Knowledge (Astrophysics) skill means that he can plot a course through hyperspace and navigate in normal space
The Profession (Piloting) skill means that he knows correct radio procedures, docking procedures, how to file a flight plan, how to file a cargo manifest, etc.

The mechanics of piloting a vessel are one thing, it's quite something else to actually be a commercial pilot. Treat the Profession skill as a level of qualification, and have the PCs hassled if they don't invest in the skill. For example: undergoing customs searches and safety inspections, or detained because they just flew through restricted space. The possibilities are endless.

Awesome explanation. I never really thought about the profession skill.
