What is slaine all about?

Mage

Mongoose
Okay, I have played judge dredd and I love it. 2000 AD has cool worlds.
Getting to the point, I am too lazy to go reading up on slaine, and want to hear a die-hard fan tell me about it. Since it is coming to runequest, I have a picqued interest, not to mention all the celt stuff in it, since I'm Irish, an slaine bears simliarities in some regard to Setanta.

What is the atmosphere, world, and story like?
Let no detail go unrecognised, and feel free to be as complex as you can.

I have no knowledge of slaine whatsoever, and it has become a competitor with Elric & Hawkmoon in my eyes (I am nearly broke afterall).

Hi,
I am not a true fan because I don't have any of the comics, nor did I know about it before Moogose published the game.
Anyway it has much Celtic things in it, much more than Gurps Celtic Myth for example. Earth has a real power; it (she) gives the EP (that is the magic point) through dolmens as well as the warping which makes warriors invicible. Druids have power of the blessing/cursing and elements very unlike D&D.
The setting is totally Celtic. Main villains are the Drunes, a decadent tribe, and the Fomorians, as well as EL-creatures.
There are rules for Enech (honor/reputation) and taunting before battle (reminiscent of the Braveheart movie).

In fact the Slaine D20 were somewhat different from the usual rules (there are magic points for spell casting and these points are limited - usually 6-12) and it shouldn't be difficult to play them with RQ rules.

I don't know if many material will be published under these rules but I suggest you buy the horned god campaign (in 4 96-pages books). It is about collecting magic stones and unifying tribes against a king that don't want to retire.

If you look in this forum, you'll easily find some review/comments about the game.

Slaine is IMHO the best comic strip ever to come out of 2000ad. It is everything that you could want from a mythical celtic hero setting. It sets up a believable tribal culture, has got some of the best villians ever in the form of the Sloughs and the Fomorians and the artwork is usually of a great standard.
Some of the stories were a bit over the top (the Time travelling stuff is pretty poor and the earlier stuff with the cythrons and leyser guns was pretty naff) but the whole Horned God saga is awesome (I highly recommend that anyone who wants to run a Slaine campaign get these in graphic novel form).
I would hold off buying the d20 stuff if I was you though, the Runequest version that comes out next month will be much better, purely because Runequest suits itself to Slaine more than d20 ever will. If I was you I would buy the Runequest rulebook now and see if you like that as you'll need it to play Runequest Slaine anyway.

Well, I already have the runequest core, and thats why slaine piqued (I spel it wrong) my interest. I am a D20 anti-disestablishmentarianist. I wouldn't give a rat's ass about it if it was d20 to be honest, but with the runequest rules, and the fact that it is celtic seems cool.

I am going to check up the saga book by the way, just need to go to my local comic and mini shop and order it.

Just to avoid any misunderstanding: there is a horned god campaign from Mongoose (in 4 books) as well as a horned god saga from the comics.

I kind of figured. Soudned like a successful graphic novel, and that would be ripe to be made into scenario.

Slaine. Some people might think of him as a more Hibernian verison of Conan the Barbarian, although it's been said that both of them share the same Atlantean blood. Though I very much doubt they are blood related.

They both exist in their own fantacy-altered worlds that could very well have existed along time ago.

Think of him as a spike haired Conan. A barbarian with those colourful tarten pants and the hefty two handed full moon shaped axe 'Brain-Biter and evil smelling dwarf Ukko his traveling companion.

Master of the warp spasm. That's a mystical battle frenzy that another historical Cletic hero called Cuchulain was known to go into during his many great battles.

Incidently, many of the earlier Slaine stories had some connection with the better known Celtic and other northern European Myths. I always thought the the trials of Zodiac star temple that Slaine had to undergo before becoming King of his tribe, mirrors that of the trials of the greek hero Hercules.

Slaine's mother, Macha being killed from being trampled by a chariot all because her husband boasted of her running skill. This is well known Celtic myth that basically went the same way. There are many other Slaine stories earlier on that can almost be compared to popluar celtic literature.

Onother thing that should be worth noting is that Slaine's enemies become less human, more monster as the tale progress's. Skullswords, Drunes, Witchs, Vikings, Zombies, Formorians, Cythrons, and El creatures, Dark gods, ect......

Then there is the saga of the Horned god where he begins to show signs of semi-immortality by becoming this very deity himself. it was these particular stories that became very memorable among the fans because the art work was done in colours. A first for Slaine and done very well, I might add.

This film teaser pretty much sums up what Slaine is all about and is based on the comic of the same name. This is the type of stuff that you would be in for. Couldn't have said it better myself. Some of other boarder here who missed it the first time round. When I had sneaked the URL address on another thread for this about a month ago may be in for a bit of treat.

After the Horned God, I have heard rather than read myself, that Slaine eludes his ceramonial death to go a time travelling to various important events on our ancient timeline. Some of which happened in history. Although Slaine himself is as far this comic concerned mostly ficticious. I say this because there is was supposed to be a man called Slaine Mac Dela, a Firbolg king who your'll read more about here.

Though the Slaine from this comic is more of a mismatch of the other celtic characters such as Cuchulain, Finn of the Fianna, Williiam Wallace, King Arthur, Hercules and Thor, your willing to except heros from the other northern cultures and Conan if your want to add fiction.

These would be episodic, often ending with Slaine re-entering the mystical tunnel of time. I could almost imagine Slaine cameoing in the likes of 'Star Gate SGone', 'Sliders' and the more ancient 'Time Tunnel' television series. Popular during the mid seventies to early eighties.

Slaine's latest escapdes were based on the Lebor Gabála Érenn ( The taking of Ireland.)

Or Books of Invasion as the stories were called. Done in the eye catching photoshoped and oil painted art of Clint lanley. This is just another famous Slaine version of these other historical set of battles resulting in the deaths of some of very well known characters that he met along the ay. Some friends and alot of foes.

Thats all I could say really without spoiling the stories even more. You could find out more at

If you haven't read the comic. Then be sure to read the free online comic 'The Time Monster' where it all begins.

After reading question properly........

Although evrybody else has pretty much given you the right idea before I have.

No body has mentioned the forbidden Time Monsters. Dinosaurs exist in Slaine's Time in little hidden valley areas that are warm enough to support them.

That is one reason for name 'Tir-Nan-Og'. 'Translated, this reads as 'Land of the Young'.

They are forbidden by the drunes to kill or eat.

Well, I am postive that it's forbidden to eat their flesh. I think it's still becuase they are rare.

Anyway, the large flying reptiles thought to be dinosaurs. Have slowly adapted to the colder climtes where they have grown in size and now breath fire. This is how dragons evolved. There are afew addition physical differences between what they have become and the normal flying lizards they once were.

There many strange beasts that have come to exist in the land of the young.

Alternative armies do a nice range of figs for this game. The Slaine figs from GW are suitably heroic in comparison to fit in nicely. Yes before you ask another range I have collected but never gamed.

For figures also check out Rackham a french company. They make a line for some card game of theirs but their Kelt (spelled with K) figures are awesome for Slaine.

many have tryed to do a celtic game but only mongoose have done the setting proud you also have brilliant source material from the comics .

what also has got the juices running this time is the fact that the basic rules means slaineheads have a framework when travelling in pirate times or as a eternal champion which is brill. :D

if you dont count the ones slaine dyed blue in his youth never seen a story with cows with clothes so yes slaines lifestock goes sky clad too :D
