Large silhouette (Target has its beam facing attacker) +1 bonus.
What is meant by beam? Beam usually means the widest part of a ship. So does this mean the broadside or looking down the front or rear of a ship?

The beam is as you say the line of width across the ship, so when it is facing towards the enemy they can see the whole ship from stem to stern ie the broadside.

Basically getting a bonus because you can see more ship.
