It's a measure of your character's ability to handle himself or herself in battle which is all well and good when defining a Giak's aggression but for some folks a little differentiation is desirable.
So one option is to create new attributes but not everyone is keen on increasing complexity on that axis.
One idea I really like was more or less borrowed from Precis Intermedia Groups Iron Gauntlets: Flairs. Basically these are subattributes that are either slightly higher or lower than the main attribute but when added together they zero out equaling the Attribute.
The flairs can be anything but have to be an even number because when one goes up another has to go down. I was thinking 4 would be a good number.
Might measures your brawn, physique, and raw strength. Used to bend, push, pull, grapple, climbing and jumping, and swing a melee weapon.
Prowess is your character's coordination, reflexes, and deftness. Used to pick locks or disarming boobytraps, walking along a narrow ledge, tumbling, climbing a tree, catching and throwing, performing a courtly dance or playing an instrument, and using a ranged weapon such as a bow or sling.
Guile defines how clever and intelligent your character is as well as perceptiveness, logic, reason, and book learning. Use this to know a fact, spot an ambush or secret door, searching a cluttered room, cracking a code, or deciphering a riddle.
Bearing measures your character's appeal, not just appearance but also personal magnetism as well as the strength of mind and spirit. Used to intimidate an opponent, charm a winsome barmaid, various performances delivering a rousing speech.
A flair can be up to two points higher or lower than Combat Skill. When raising a flair by 1 or 2 points, another flair must go up by an equal amount so if a Kai Monk with 14 Combat skill wanted a Prowess of +2, one of the other three flairs would have to be -2. When added together, all flairs must equal 0.
I suppose a character could distribute the -2 to two flairs which would be -1 but that might easily be abused.
So there ya go, feel free to ruminate.
