(WaW) Main rulebook Army lists

For some time, I've been wodering about 2 things that seem awkward to me in the Army lists. First off, if you compare all the Field gun damage stats, you'll notice that the Russian 76mm Field gun deals a Piercing/2 more than any other Field gun in the Army lists. Now compare the German 75mm L46 AT gun from the main rulebook and the same gun in the German Armor compendium, it now deals the same damage as the Russian Field gun. Should all Field guns stats be upgraded with the Piercing/2 trait to give them real punch? I was also concerned about the German Pioneers. Is it a mistake that they don't benefit from the Ambush special rule, otherwise the cost don't seem fair to me, they are expensive as any other engineer unit in the book.

While writing the Vehicle Compendiums I had a MUCH broader perspective.
I wrote tables upon tables to compare the units involved. Naturally some stats needed a tweak here and there.
IMO the Compendium stats are more valid and balanced and should be used.

That brings us to one of the problems of all books under the Logo License: they are unofficial. It is up to Matt to change the units of the main rulebook. I can only offer my help here.

So you have to use the official rulebook stats in all Mongoose tournaments, otherwise you have to agree with your opponents which stats to use.

But I can assure you, whenever I changed something it is also shown in the points costs. So you do not get better stats for free!

@ German Pioneers: Can you be more specific? What is wrong compared to what other unit?

Concerning the German pioneers, it's the fact that they don't have the Ambush rule in their special rules while Engineer units from all others (British, Russia, USA) benefit from the Ambush rule and the cost is about the same for all of them.

For the AT guns, do you suggest raising the cost fot the German, British & USA guns if they benefit from a Piercing/2 trait?

Thanks for your lightning fast reply Agis!

Pioneer : Ahh, I see.
Well the British Engineer Section (P. 46) also got no Ambush.
IIRC it was a deliberate decision.
As far as the points are concerned, all seems well for me.

If you want to use Ambush on German Pioneer units add a flat
+30 points per squad and let them benefit from it.

AT guns: No, I would just use them as they are.
The British and US guns of the WaW book had on average a lower AP in real life.
They would be too good with P/2.

If you want to have the German L46 on par with the tank gun in my
German Vehicle Compendium, add the Piercing/2 trait and raise
the cost of the Infantry gun by a flat 10 points.

It seems pretty good to me. :D That PaK 40 Gun will now be of some use against enemy armor!

Thanks for the answers Agis!

My thoughts on the lists is that there should be opportunities to upgrade officers and Sergeants with Traits to make them tougher than the rank and file, improve their leadership ability, etc.

My second thought on the lists is that since every single soldier in a list has the exact same stats, they should've saved space by writing the stat line once for each list.

My last thought is they missed opportunities for small but characterful rules that emphasize the doctrines and training of the various nations involved. While I would encourage them not to copy those of other popular WWII games, I think the general idea of "national characteristics" has some validity, and make fun and sense in a game setting.

Finally, Agis, in your WaW add-on, the Concentrated Fire rule (which I like) should probably read "can re-roll misses" or "can re-roll any damage dice" depending on your intent.

Cheers,
AA

That's the route I went with Tread-Head. The HQ for each list has two trait options that are unique to that list: German Hauptman: Veteran or Blitzkrieg, US Captain: Adjust Fire or Hell on Wheels.

Yup, was also keenly spotted on EvoCommand: The rule reads now: "can re-roll any or all".
Thanks! :)
