Well, that's just the thing - what does a kill result represent? A direct hit? The shell blasting through the cockpit, or into an empty bomb bay?
Was it shooting a flak shell, or an AP round?
Are you sure it didn't just disable an engine, and the plane didn't limp on?
Most of the planes being represented in the game aren't large bombers at high altitudes - they're fighter bombers doing low altitude strafing runs and dive-bombing, and that's where an 88mm wouldn't be of much use. What damage they will be taking will be from HMGs or autocannons, and most of those planes could manage a few hits from said.
