Vincent's World Maps

Mongoose
The final batch of maps from Vincent N. Darlage, at least for now.

I've saved the best for last; here are magnificent world maps, including versions without text and borders. As an added bonus, there is also a map of the Eastern Desert of Shem and adjacent nations.

Enjoy! :-)

Thulsa and VD, you rock!

All we need is to start getting Vincent's old website material on yours and we'll be set!

Wow! These are unbelievable! I don't know how Mongoose could pass these up if they saw them.

Interesting how small Kihtai is. Is the Island to the east of that Lemuria?

And what is the big Madagascar type island East of the cape of the Black Kingdoms?

I hope this isn't too offensive, because I truly intend it as constructive criticism. While, I appreciate Vincent's meticulous adherence to Howard's intention of the geography of Hyboria, these maps are, well... less than pretty. Maybe I'm too stuck up on the aesthetics, but this is practically unusable for me. I wish that Vincent could supervise a map rendered by an established graphic artist or cartographer. I think that his research and devotion to the purity of Howard's Hyboria combined with a more visually appealling format would be perfect. This especially applies to the temple and city sketches. Anyway... my two cents...

That is fair. Those maps were made as guidelines for cartographers; I am not trying to pass myself off as a cartographer. I just would REALLY like to see an accurate map. However, the maps went unused, so I thought I would offer them as-is. A cartographer has a professional skill and polish that I lack. The temple maps are pencil sketches I made as guidelines for the sourcebooks that were unused.

Since they were basically sitting unused, I sent them to Thulsa. If you want to use them to make a better map, please do!

Thanks for the comment!

Well, I, for one, have to disagree with you.

Have a look at the Eastern Desert map, for example:

Now, in my opinion, this actually looks like a real piece of geography.

Compare it to the same area on the map on the endpapers of the first edition core book (which was presumably done by a professional, but which simply looks cartoonish).

Heck, even compare it to the regional map on page 115 of Road of Kings. Way too little detail, simply a mass of place names on a pale background.

My vote is for Vincent's maps. And imagine what they would look like if they were redrawn/brushed up by a professional.

Don't get me wrong, if I have to choose between accuracy and aesthetics, I'm with you all the way Vincent. I hope Mongoose can take a cue from you and everyone who has posted their support for your work.

Great work, Vincent, as always! I would choose to have your maps on the new road of kings over any other map.

Dear All,

Tulsa:

Having said that, the one thing that the endpapers had which raises them up was contour lines. That's what makes them more useful.

All the best
