VAS Tournaments - how did they go?

I'm planning a VAS tournament and was wondering how the different fleets played in the tournament and whether or not the aircraft seemed effective.

Any info would be appreciated!

Hi,

Our tournament went well but we only had 6 players, 2 Japanese, 2 French, 1 American and an Italian!

The fact that there was another VaS tournament about 60 miles away the day before didn't help attendance!

Check out our rules pack for the house rules and clarifications used.

The only thing I will change next time is that I will limit the number of ships of any one class to the numbers quoted for that class in the rule book.

One player decided it would be fun to field 10 French aircraft carriers!

My Italian fleet spent the entire game being chased by a pack of aircraft carriers trying to get within torpedo range!

Yes French Carriers have torpedoes!

How well did the aircraft do? Did many of the bomber type land hits?

Also were any other ships / fleets cheesey?

We increased the number of attack dice to 2 and allowed them to re-fuel but they still didn't do a huge amount of damage in my game.

I think they were a real handfull in some of the other games though and he did win the tournamnet overall!

We set the tournament at 5pts Battle level with no War level, subs or land based aircraft which seemed to work well.

The most powerful ship at that level is the Nagato but not invinsible.

One house rule that a player and I have been discussing is for bombers:

Instead of a fighter stopping a bomber (to dogfight), it rolls it's attacks, but next turn the bomber can move if it's still alive.

Another is to increase the damage for bombers, however if it takes a hit, it losses some of it's damage potential.

Interesting, but I haven't tried it in a game yet.

That is an idea I had as well.

If the bomber want to move it can and the fighter can decide whether to move with it and have another go at it.

I didn't include it because I got so much flak for changing the rules that I thought that the fewer changes the better.
