Values switched for Vacc Suit Armor

All,

This is my first post ever in the Mongoose forums so I hope it is a good one! :D

I was rolling a new character to get a hold of the character creation guidelines and I ran across a values switch on page 94 under Armour.

The First and Second Vacc Suit Cost and Required Skill seem to be switched as the lowest level Vacc Suit seems to cost more than the next level of Vacc Suit and the Skill required is 1 more than the next level of Vacc Suit as well.

Also, as a side note, there is no armor that meets the value of KCr10/TL12 for the Armor perk for the Marine branch on page 45.

Thanks for reading and I am really looking forward to playing Traveller with my group!

Hi there,

One of the issues you mention, I'm pretty sure is by design. The other, I can guess at. Folks can feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

You will see a similar pattern with the combat armor and HE Vacc suit.

Re TL. The first TL that items appear at is the early stages of development. As the TL went up, the materials used and technology put into the item improved, so they became easier to use and required less skill.

For price, if the item were identical, the theory is that as the TL goes up, the manufacturing technology also improves making production slightly cheaper. However, these are not identical suits made at a higher TL. The protection goes up and weight goes down - related to more efficient materials. I'd assume those more advanced materials would be more costly...

However, GerryBM brings up a good point. The COST should not go down for 1 TL then double again at the next.

Look at Vacc Suits:

TL8: 12K
TL10: 11K
TL12: 20K

Doesn't make sense, either the cost goes up at each TL or it goes down at each TL. Having it jump down then up seems counterintuitive.

Combat Armour and the HES Vacc Suit do the same thing.

This is Traveller! Costs go UP with TL! :)

For the vacc suit, I'd be fine with cost going down, then up.

If we assume the TL10 suit is an upgraded, enhanced, less bulky and generally better version of the TL8 suit and has become easier and cheaper to mass-produce, its price would go down even though it becomes better. The TL12 suit on the other hand is a completely different model, according to its description. The -12 is the old 14 model, enhanced vacc-proof clothing more or less. Much more advanced than the older suit model, and thus much more expensive.
