I use pre-war decks. Specifically, Yellow or Tan Colors, although not yet complete my Essex Class carrier will attempt to mimic a freshly laid deck by using Orange Red to try to bring the the illusion of the mahogany decking used on US carriers. I saw a color movie from the US Navy archives on TV and was impressed.
The real problem with small models is that if you paint them in the "real colors" they are 1. Too Dark and 2. Hard to distinguish so Use a lightened up version of the paints. check out Agis Neugebauer's site. here is a link to his Royal Navy.
