I am just reading through the new One ring rpg, which is very nice, and it has some pretty revolutionary ideas for abstract combat, which could be adapted:
Stances
Each round, each player decides their stance:
Forward Stance
This is the most aggressive, but also the riskier option in combat. A character will be in the heat of combat, constantly pushing for attack, but putting their selves in the front of the action. When adopting this stance, you inflict +2 damage to your opponents, but take 1 more damage to yourself. Those players in this stance are the first to act each round
Open Stance
This is a more neutral stance - its the default stance for most players - striking a fine line between risk and aggression. Those players in this stance act after players adopting a Forward stance
Defensive Stance
This stance involves hanging back and acting defensive. You inflict 2 less damage to your opponent, but take 1 point less to yourself. Those players in this stance act after those in Open Stance
Rearward Stance
This stance is reserved for making ranged attacks at foes, and can only be attempted if at least 2 other allies are in hand to hand combat, or when the heroes outnumber foes - never when they are outnumbered by their enemies. If the players are fighting on a ledge or in a corridor, the Gm may allow to adopt a rearward stance behind those in close combat, without these conditions. They can only be targeted by ranged weapons. Players in this stance act after those adopting other stances.
