Use of Runes in Mongoose RuneQuest I

In MRQ1 runes are something very real/tangible and have to be "integrated" in order to be used (i.e. succeed at a Persistence test). This is the only RQ version where runes are treated this way. Basically you can find runes anywhere, especially in magical surroundings (e.g. a location where magical battles took place between gods/heroes).
Once you integrate the rune, you gain the skill Runecasting (appropriate to the integrated rune) at its basic Characteristic-derived score (POW+CHA) and can improve it like any other skill.
An integrated rune grant 2 mains advantages:
- you gain its runic power (generally +10% to the rune-related skills but this can translate into other bonus, like ignoring negative effects from exposure to cold environments if you have the cold rune).
- you can learn and cast rune magic spells. Each spell is related to one or two runes and you must have all the associated runes to cast it.

The MRQ1 Rune Magic List has the same spell's range as the Common Magic of MRQ2/Legend.

These rules are one of the major differences between MRQ1 and MRQ2.
