Trip question

I believe that you can make a trip attack while using *any* weapon, but only some weapons are designated "tripping" weapons.

The difference is this - if you are using a tripping weapon, and you fail your trip opposed check you may drop the weapon rather than be subject to a return trip by your opponent. (they often have a bonus to trip too)

If you are not using a special tripping weapon then it is you yourself who attempts the trip and if you lose, the defender may immediately react and make a Strength check opposed by your Dexterity or Strength check to try to trip you.

( non technical addendum: weapons that are designated tripping weapons normally have hooks or flexible bits)

Does this help

Plane Sailing is correct. In addition note that if you use a trip weapon to trip someone you do not provoke an AoO even if you don't have the Improved Trip feat. This is because it is not the trip attempt itself that provokes an AoO but the unarmed Melee touch attack that procedes it.

In Conan the trip weapons are:
Bill
Whip

Really, I didn't know that trip weapons circumvent AoO? Is this spelled out in the rules somewhere (d20 SRD or Conan OGL)?

How come the Pollaxe isn't a trip weapon? Except for the obvious reason that according to the rules it isn't.

The following applies to both 3.5 and Conan:

Check p 183 in Conan (p 159 in the PHB). Under the section "Tripping with a weapon" it states "in this case you make a melee touch attack with the weapon instead of an unarmed melee touch attack, and you do not provoke an AoO." In other words, the trip attempt itself does not provoke an AoO, the unarmed melee touch that procedes it does.

Probably because if you could trip with it then the Pollaxe would become the God of All Weapons. [/b]

Thanks Argo, and what's wrong with making the Pollaxe the king, do you love the Bardiche that much?
