Traveller T5

As I understand it, they're pretty much two vaguely compatible but separate things - neither is supposed to replace the other, they just run alongside eachother. You don't need T5 to run MGT, and you don't need MGT to run T5. That's the impression I've got anyway.

I think in practice what'll happen is that the "old guard" will either switch exclusively to T5 or will just stick to what they're already playing and use bits of T5 and/or MGT.

Meanwhile, I think the new blood is much more likely to get into MGT, and T5 probably won't even be on their radar.

There have been lots of people asking those kinds of questions and not a lot of answers.

BUT, the general answer has been NO, it will compliment and expand on MGT.

T5 will have a different combat system, a different just about everything, but is somehow going to mesh with MGT (and previously CT and T4) to expand and make it more detailed (tables for everything so I hear).

I don't think it will have the ability to replace MGT, honestly, from the old play test files that I saw (they were several years old mind you). T5 is a game of 'Roll dice, look it up on a table, go to another table, roll more dice and eventually determine there are 4 legs on the dog'. That is my interpretation anyway.

I think T5 will have a limited appeal in the overall market and that MGT will become the default future of Traveller.

This is of course, just My (semi) Humble Opinion.

Yeah, well, alternately the old guard will do what we always do and buy both to brew up their own unspeakable combination....and probably play what ever floats to the top.....as I intend to do....with just about every damn RPG I own.....from men & magic onwards.......

Where would the RPG world be without Houserules and GameCombo?

I still pull stuff from Traveller 2300 all the time into my Traveller stuff as well as D&D and Space Opera.

Too much goodness to ignore everything.

So will T5 (if issued) make MG Traveller out of date

Nossir. Both are parallel, and Mongoose is spearheading a lot of background material.

And, as EDG and RTT have implied, parts of T5 support MGT, rather than undermine it.

Starships can be imported from T5. Characters can, too, with a relatively painless skill level tweak (I think). Weapons as well, although some work is required to convert into the MGT damage mechanic (maybe not a lot, though?).

So, are they both stand alone full games ????

is there a need to acquire both ?????

Edit : If not whats the main differences ???

I think I'd be considered part of the "old guard". I've got over a quarter century invested in Traveller. And, I won't be buying MGT. Not at all.

I will, however, give T5 a nice, hard look when it comes out.

If I find it deserves my game dollar, I'll buy it. It'll certainly be a bargain, from what I've heard.

And, if it's crap, I've still got Classic Traveller. My gaming group loves CT, and we play it straight from the book--no houserules.

And not consistent with recent posts over on COTI talking about using material imported from other games.
