Traveller space craft are astonishingly cheap!!

Most European navies seem to be concerned that if they arrest anyone, the pirates will just claim political asylum when they get to Europe.
It is also a "prison problem", because life in an average European prison
is often preferable to life in Somalia (or a similar country), from the free
health care to the possibility to work and earn what is a negligible pocket
money in Europe, but a nice income in Somalia (or a similar country).

There would be a very real risk that people would commit crimes, inclu-
ding piracy, with the intent to be captured and imprisoned in Europe for
a couple of years. As bizarre as it may seem, there have already been
quite a few cases of this kind.

By the time we get our next President, in a couple years, our Navy might reinstate trial & execution at sea for those pirates captured. That'll slow the problem, at least for US flagged ships.

Our current "escape hatch" is to send captured pirates to a friendly Afri-
can state, for example Kenya, for trial and imprisonment whenever pos-
sible.

Ouch! Most likely will become a Pirate recycle centre.

Nice idea, but after the mess the last US President got into with "extraordinary rendition" and other dubious practices, can't see "trial and execution at sea happening anytime soon.

Agreed, but I think that it would be quite hard to prove "beyond reasonable doubt" on the evidence likely to be admissable in a Western court. Most likely scenerio, an expensive court case followed by an acquital and the release of the pirate to claim political assylum.

No problemo. All of the last Admin's policies in that area are followed by the current Admin. So, no barrier there.

I agree with what rust says about people doing crime for a better life, with prison how it is now, its preferable to living rough on the streets and thats a problem that needs solving, whether its housing or making prison, y'know, more prison like.

mmm ok, from Traveller pirates in general, to rantings about the 3I's failure to protect while collecting taxes, to how the masses would revolt over this grievous failure to provide the protection 'guaranteed' by those taxes...

We now debate the Somali Pirate problem.

That's Simple, one US Air Craft Carrier - every American registered vessel (not just 'owned' but 'owned and registered' in America) with an emergency signal system (satellite based)... And when that signal goes off there go four of our best fighter jets armed to the teeth who blow the pirate's ship(s) right out of the water.

Problem solved quickly.

Next!

They are shying away from US flagged ships already. They know that there is no negotiating with the US gov, only bullets to the head.

Sadly on this side of the pond the navy and marines are required to respect thier human rights and unless they are caught actualy shooting someone they are given a hala meal, nicotene patches and sent on thier way.

Nelson is spinning so fast in his grave if you could conect a turbine to him you couls power a small town.

Ironic in the U.S. learned the lesson from the Brits and having to deal with pirates that went after us and not the Brits because of the reason I sighted above.

Our authorities are a little more harsh, the Somali pirates currently on
trial in Hamburg face up to 15 years in prison. Whether this does more
than cost taxpayer money is quite unclear, if the Somali pirates have a
recruiting office the queue there will hardly get shorter because of it.

And once we've pretty much eliminated their going after US flagged ships, we hire out to our 'allies' to protect their ships. Small fee plus shipping, handling, dealer prep, optional services (like DVD of the entire incident, heads on a silver platter instead of in a canvas potato sack, etc.)

It's basically how I feel people who think the 'twitterdocy' (twitter idiocy) of using "@" to make a direct comment to someone, I mean it's sooo hard typing in "TO thatperson" instead of "@ thatperson"... omg the cases of carpel tunnel that short hand saves!

^ Lol, I'm guilty of that and I dont even do twitter

So GamerDude, any more info on that collaboration? Did you get my pm after?
