Traveller Release Schedule 2023

Just FYI, I'm confused why I got this conversation when I clicked on the latest page of "Traveller Release Schedule 2023"...
because people are generally not good at staying on topic so a conversation about one of the books on the release schedule ballooned out before finally getting moved to its own thread.

OK then, to get us back on topic...;)

Really excited to see Mysteries of the Ancients. Were the scenarios contained within this always part of the Ancients campaign or have they been repurposed to slot into this epic narrative?

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. I'd like to run Ancients with my group, but i'm not sure if I should wait for the (prequel?) in December first?

Secrets of the Ancients is an entirely self contained campaign and has been since its first iteration 40 years ago. Mysteries of the Ancients is a prequel in that it gathers together some other Ancients themed adventures that make a good palate setter for Secrets. Mongoose may be adding more content to make them more explicitly feed into Secrets, but originally all of those adventures were standalone with no direct link to each other. Just related themes.

Personally, I wouldn't wait 6 months to run Secrets if that's what you intend to run a campaign specifically around Secrets. If you are running a general campaign in which Secrets is just going to be a part, might be worth running your other stuff and then work in the Mysteries and then Secrets. But that kind of decision is really about your group's schedule, so ...

Edit: lol. Your "wait until December" threw me off. The PDF of Mysteries is expected in August. Still a timing issue for how your group does things, but doing some set up and getting started adventures before going with Mysteries in 2 months is quite different (imho) from delaying 6 months.

This is very possible - Mysteries of the Ancients would work very well as being part of a 'trader' style campaign, having a few 'normal' adventures to throw your Travellers off the scent before plunging them into what ends up as a truly titanic ending in Wrath of the Ancients.

So, if you wanted to get started straight away, begin with a couple of adventures in the Spinward Marches (Marches Adventures 1-5 has you covered there :)), and then dive into Mysteries when it is released. By the time you work through that and Secrets, Wrath of the Ancients will be available for you to cap the campaign.

Oh, oops! It's not December? My bad lol. Thanks for the advice. :)

This is EXACTLY my plan. Just started the party on High n Dry which looks like an excellent starter and will then weave in the other adventures from the Marches Adventures book plus Mysteries when it comes out. There will be plenty of foreshadowing fun...😁

The race who lived at the pyramids were not the Ancients, yes, but it's not true to say it has nothing to do with the Ancients:
  1. In the intro to Twilight's Peak, Marc Miller states: "... this adventure is itself an extension of two previously published Traveller adventures- Research Station Gamma (Adventure 21, and Shadows (part of Double Adventure 1)." So he considered Shadows part of the Ancients early trilogy.
  2. There's a Droyne Coyn to be found in the pendulum shaft fracture of the pyramids (area 14).
  3. There's a bag of 37 more Droyne Coyns to be found with the skeleton of a reptilian creature at area 20 on the lower level of the pyramids.
What is the link between this race from the Coreward parts of the galaxy and the Ancients? Don't know, and Miller does not say. Why do they have the Coyns distributed by the Ancients to the Droyne? Don't know, and again, Miller does not say. This set of coyns has more than the total of Coyns in modern sets, is it an earlier set of coyns distributed when the pyramids where in use? Don't know, Miller doesn't ... you get the picture.

But there does seem to be a link worth teasing out. If you've not read Shadows recently, go look at it again.
I always took the coyn to be a red herring, to be honest it was thought to have been dropped by the GM to mess with our characters I didn’t even realise it was in the text 👍

I don't think it was a red-herring for a couple of reasons:

1. Marc Miller or GDW once referred to these adventures, including Shadows, as part of a series of linked adventures regarding the ancients.
2. One Coyn, dropped in the broken shaft is interesting, the skeleton with the rest of the coyns in a bag is more than that.

I think this was intended as a lead-in to the other adventures, with the coyns serving as a mystery for the players to solve. Twilights Peak and Research Station Gamma also feature the coyns as items the players pick up that gets them asking questions about what they are, what they are for etc. Of course, in the style of '80s adventures, none of this is spelled out or probably even figured out by Marc Miller - it's just an enigma that the Referee can leverage to lead the players on to more interesting lines of inquiry and related adventures.

Personally, I'm prepping to make the Coyns a central part of the enigma in how I run Mysteries :)

Shadows.

These reptilian aliens lack wings... not Droyne or Chirpers.

The skeleton with the coins, no mention of wings just again the use of the reptilian description.

The makers of the pyramid were adapted to the atmospheric effects - Droyne would die without protective suits.

The only link is the coins...

This keeps coming up.
I am not saying these aliens are droyne or chirpers. It's clear to anyone who can read that they are not.
I am saying that they clearly had links to Droyne, and possibly the Ancients, how or why is not explained at all by the adventure. The presence of the Coyns is an enigma to have the players chase up leads on where they came from and start making links between the droyne, the Chirpers and the Ancients.

So yes, the only link is the coyns. But this was written by Marc in the early '80s and is as loosey-goosey as everything else penned back then. So a clearly worked out link, written into the adventure with top-notch referee guidance on how to use it is just too much to expect.

I'd argue that the intent is clear., however. YMMV

It's now July 2023 at the time of this reply. Usually, around this time, we start speculating about what we would like to see in our Christmas 2023 stockings, if not what we'd like to see in 2024.

I'd like to see The Fifth Frontier War. Seems to have slipped yet another year.
I'd like to see a FFW module where the Travellers are central to the story, rather than a basic wargame. Wargaming turns me off colder and quicker than the latest Taylor Swift album.
I'd like to see something where the Travellers are presented with an endless series of wartime adventures themed around turning points in the War: maybe they are there at the beginning, or at the end; or maybe they caused the War to begin, or did something to bring it to an end.
Maybe we could have twists to the Trade Game, such as Wartime Events including "Commandeered! - Your entire cargo of luxury goods has just been commandeered by the Imperial Navy for the war effort" or "Reserve Activation Clause: Your ship and crew are now clandestine spies for the Imperium. Your trade game continues as before, but you never need to pay berthing or maintenance fees, and your mortgage is suspended for the duration of the War."
