Traveller players getting to know SST

Banded Mongoose
The powers that be here at Mongoose have suggested that crusty old Traveller players, like me, might benefit from spending a little time on the various forums getting to know crusty old SST players, like you’all. So I started a topic on SST for Dummies so I can get a feel for how the game is played.

1. THE BASICS:
Star Ship Troopers is about men with big guns killing alien bugs. So that makes it sort of like the movie Men in Black, right? [Just kidding] :)

Is it D20 based and deals with infantry combat like the movie SST? If so, then I assume that the current combat mechanics involve Hit Points and Armor Classes like the old (and new) D&D.

What scale does the game focus on? Individual soldiers? Squads? Companies and Divisions?

How do these sample Bug Cards fit in?

2. OTHER QUESTIONS:
Is there really such a thing as a Spotted Mongoose?

There is no Duck-Billed Mongoose, so what is the story behind that?

3. DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR TRAVELLER PLAYERS?

Hello! Unfortunately you've managed to fall into the wrong forum! :D

This is for the Starship Troopers Miniatures game. But that's alright, I'm sure you can find the right spot if you look around a little bit! :)

Hmmm, after a second read on your post, you might actually be in the right place. I'm don't play the current miniatures game, but let me try to take a crack at your questions anyway. ;)

The minis game doesn't seem to be D20 based. It's more its own abstract system though it still has defense values and hit bonuses, I imagine. I don't think they have hit points.

Scale seems to be generally squadron based, but of course it's a point based system so the sky is the limit! :)

The current game is getting phased out. You can check the current issues of Signs and Portents (Wargamer edition) for information about the next SST minis game. This will be called Starship Troopers evolution and will involve pre-painted, non-random figurines. I for one am quite excited by it. The cards are the preliminary stats for the new game system.

Just because you've never seen a duck-billed mongoose doesn't mean they don't exist. I bet you don't believe in nargles either?

Thank You.

I have been scanning he "new posts" for SST and General topics of interest and didn't even realize that there was a miniature and a rpg version of SST. That explains the cards that keep poping up (I was curious how you use cards in a RPG - now I realize that the cards belong to the miniatures game). Now I get it.

I'm off to find the RPG forum and try again.
This time I've got a clue. :)
