What will happen with MgT when Traveller 5 comes out?

Will it carry on?

Will it be anyway compatible?

Will the licence faid away?

From what I know about T5, not much. :D

Mongoose has a license for (at least) ten years, and is producing Traveller
material at high speed. Far Future Enterprises does not have the capacity
to compete with this production schedule in any meaningful way, and it
would be unwise to compete directly with one's own license holder. So,
I do not expect any real competition between Mongoose Traveller and T5.

T5 is at best partially compatible with Mongoose Traveller, unless things
will change a lot before it is published, I would compare the differences
to those between Classic Traveller and T4.

Well first thing that will happen is there will be some (fill in the blank) individuals that will start comparing how bad T5 is to MGT or how bad MGT is to T5.

Next, IMO, MGT sales will increase as there is fluff, backstory and major support for MGT in new settings, equipment and such.

And finally, You are making a big assumption that T5 will come out before Mongoose's Traveller license expires.

{Use to be a positive supporter of T5. Until all the background politics showed favoritism and disregard for others.}

You mean that hasn't started? Or really expand the selection to any edition of Traveller vs. T5.

Dave's right here, the success of T5 will be out producing MgT for the given time frame. Or T5 to be viable needs to put out better than a product a quarter, and (This is important, No I mean really important) pay their writers. T5 also has the baggage of all the failures of T4 to overcome.

Yep, the announced release date has come and gone a couple of times.

They've been talking about T5 being released for at least three years now, from my reckoning. I'm not sure it's really going to serve much of a point at this stage either, to be blunt.

Since it's the New Year, here is my prediction:

Like when the T5 CD was released, there will be an upswing of its discussion on both the CotI and MGT boards. Due to divided opinions this will lead to flame wars along with some more rational discussion in between.

Those that love MGT will keep playing and discussing MGT while saying overall negative things about why they don't like T5 (most without buying or trying it). Those that love T5 will buy it and most of them will say how good it is compared to MGT. Those on the fence or who love all things Traveller will also go buy T5 and perhaps give the most non-slanted reviews.

I see no hindering affect on MGT at all. T5 won't have the mammoth support of other products like Mongoose. Lots of free fan stuff might erupt, but official supplements will be near non-existant because of the one-man company and the fact that T5 core is pretty all encompassing in itsef.

What is Traveller 5 for?

It's a new version of Traveller more along the lines of CT/T4. Not TNE, not MT, but still somewhat similar to MGT. It's for what any version of Traveller is for - scifi RPG goodness.

Apparently it's also good for flamewars when all of us Traveller fans really should be best of friends. :?

True for Traveller (all) fans, but it seems there are some Traveller (spe-
cific version only) fans around, and that "only" is obviously enough rea-
son to start flamewars and continue them for decades.

On my German home forum someone deleted all his posts about Travel-
ler and science fiction in general because the majority of users refused
(in a really polite way) to consider Mongoose Traveller the intended de-
struction of all Traveller stands for, so I am very close to giving up the
hope that all Traveller fans can be best friends ... :(

Actually it takes some of the more problematic parts of both MT and TNE. It also has real problems with the Science part of being Science fiction. Actually there big issue is it is being written by a committee that doesn't understand engineering constrains. And only vaguely understands what the SI measurements are conveying.

But I am Biased I am a scientist...

The good part is it has a strong sense of style and a stong layout design, except for Marc's charts at the back fetish. (It is nice if done well, but if T4 gives us anything. there isn't much hope)

Dude, every edition is good for flame wars.....

And if y'all are really intrested I believe you still can get a playtest cd...

Yep, I was right. I wasn't even trying to strike a match, in fact trying to put one out, and a flame started.

Have had it for some time or wouldn't be giving any opinion.

My opinion having dabbled with all of the systems above is the progression was CT - T4 - T5. I can't see how (overall without cherry picking pieces) T5 is more like TNE then CT. TNE is the only one in the bunch that used a completely different game system (Twilight 2000) as opposed to a progression starting with CT.

If we're going to be picky, a heavily modified 2nd edition that was later re-used for 2.2. :) I've actually considered a d10 'downgrade' for TNE. It should run a lot quicker.

True, but that's largely due to project overruns. This is why "labors of love" only rarely pay off, and then only if an exceptional project manager is involved...

He's wasting money on project overruns? Care to state where you got that information from?

From my understanding it's only the author and his computer making PDFs with support of a small online community helping for free. He has sold a few "beta" copies on CD. I imagine he is making the CDs as they are ordered so he is only making money off them. I'm not sure how "project overruns" are costing him money. It's not like he's paying a staff, renting a warehouse, etc.

It's not so much money I had in mind for the overruns - time is the big overrun. Of course, since he has to eat in the mean time, and pay rent and other living expenses, time does tend to indirectly eat into the profits.

So if he wasn't designing T5 he wouldn't have to pay rent or eat?
