Tourney battle reports 20th Feb

Greg Smith

Mongoose
Excellent tourney organised by Da Boss, in the very picturesque surroundings of Boughton House. With cups of tea all day and cooked lunch provided.

As Ken said, “It is Call To Arms, as though Prince Andrew played it.”

The Games

I chose Shadows for my fleet, simply because I have my right hand bound up after breaking my wrist, so Iwanted a fleet I could move without measuring angles and accurate movement. For the same reason I limited the number of ships in my fleets as much as possible – less ships, less writing and book-keeping.

Game 1 vs Mr Pink

Mr Pink had drazi. I had 2 scouts and 2 fighter wings. I was horribly outnumbered, but it didn’t take me long to kill small ships, especially claw eagles. My luck started good – with two 6,5 crits. Mr Pinks rolls were unlucky. He failed a lot of stealth rolls, including during attack runs. Mr Pink’s fighters killed mine, but he could not do enough damage to my scouts.

Result 20-0, 7 ships killed, no losses.

Game 2 vs Adrian H.

Adrian had 2 white stars, a nolo’tar and 2 blue stars. I had a scout and a stalker. Again I was outnumbered, but my stalker made quick work of the nolo’tar. I was then struggling to attack ships of my choice, and Adrianwas beating my stealth pretty well, so I was forced to move the stalker defensively. I forgot the anti-fighter beam completely. But then my luck changed – to chase the stalker, Adrian moved a Blue star through an asteroid field at top speed, and rolled a 1. BOOM! He then moved a white star at high speed through the same field. “I won’t roll another 1”, he said. BOOM! All of a sudden it was two ships apiece, and I just remembered the anti-fighter beam. I was simply able to hunt down his remaining ships with my scout.

Result 20-0, 5 ships killed, no losses.

Game 3 vs TGT

Always a pleasure to play Neil. HE had cylons masquerading as Vree. He choose his fleet just before the game started – 1 Z’Takk. I revealed mine, one young ship.

We spent several turns, dancing around anasteroid field, until he got brave and popped out to shoot me. My first crit was a bridge hit. We danced around some more, then I got a 4,6 weapons crit. I lunged in for the kill and got an adrift crit. At which point Niel capitulated.

Result 20-0, 1 ship killed, no losses.

Game 4 vs Clanger

I wasn’t looking forward to this match-up. Clanger usually has the most incredible luck with beam rolls. I had seen him roll 6 hits and 3 crits from a 2 AD beam in his game vs G’Quan. Plus I knew what his fleet composition was for this game.

I had an ancient ship and a young ship. He had a mothership carrying a war cruiser and two light cruisers, plus a war cruiser. He was essentially a warship up on me. He also selected crit protection for his gegs.

We both kept a war ship in hyperspace. My tactic was to keep out of range of his secondaries and his mothership and concentrate on his cruisers. My fighters did me proud, savaging on cruiser, before the beams from the ships killed it dead. My beam rolls we good, and his were average, he failed to knock down shields in the first round of firing. Then my young ship received fire from all quarters and was pinned by the second cruiser. However, his beam rolls weren’t good enough to pin it again. His cruiser then succumbed to my beams, quickly followed by a light cruiser. His mothership then was easy meat and he capitulated.

Result 20-0, 5 ships killed, no losses.

I didn’t expect to do well. I didn’t chose what I would consider competitive fleets. I set out with the intent of having a few games and a bit of fun. And I did have fun, and a lot of luck and did rather well.

Well, an interesting day to say the least...

Game one was a pre-arranged revenge match against Star-Lynx (Shane). He had brought Vree - 1 Vaarl, 1 Xeel & 3 Xixx - to take on my newly acquired Centauri - a rather cheesy selection of 4 Haven & 4 Demos. I had my Demos quartet squadroned and Shane did the same with his Xixx...
I won initiative in every turn and used the terrain to hide my approach from the Vree. As soon as I got into a decent position, I sped the squadron around the asteroid field that the Vree had been hiding behind and let the Xixx squadron have it  it was all over bar the shouting after that, but I did manage to lose a Demos and a Haven in the resulting explosions of the two final Vree ships :x
Despite that, a good start to the day...

Game two was an ISA internal struggle against G'Quan - he had a WS, 2 Blue Stars, 2 Brakiri Ikortas and some fighters (2 Nial, 2 WS fighters). My fleet was 2 WS, the Liandra, 1 Vree Xeel, 2 Blue Stars & 2 Vree Ximm escorts. The keener eyed amongst you will notice that my fleet is too big for a 3pt Raid game... I had taken my fleet for game 3 instead!!!
So, despite completely wiping out G'Quan's forces, for no losses, I ended up with a big fat zero!  :(

A silly mistake, that wasn't picked up by myself or my opponent during the game, so there was no time to restart... this pretty much took me out of the running for the day, but I have no-one to blame but myself.

The third game was against Alex's Centauri - Liati, Balvarin, Vorchan & 2 Kutai. My fleet was - obviously - the same one that I had used in the previous game.
Alex was unfortunate that I had a fleet that could negate the Liati's main defence, and so the battle ship was soon taken out of the game... the remainder of the Centauri ships were also soon out-maneouvered and destroyed - sorry fella. :?

Game four was against AdrianH's Shadows - a Young ship, 2 Stalkers & 4 Scouts - with my ISA fleet of Carrier, Enforcer, Gunship, 2 WS, Liandra, 2 Vree Xixx & 2 Blue Stars.
A couple of little errors against a good opponent saw a short ranged furball in and around an asteroid field - not the best place to fight the Shadows (come to think of it, there are no good places to fight the Shadows)!
The WS fighters did their bit and salvaged some pride, but the fact that I lost this game by a 1/4 VP because of a crippled ship is testament to how close it was.

Thoroughly enjoyed the day and the chilli, and hope that we can convince Charles to throw another one later this year, rather than wait til 2011.

Game 1: was supposed to be against Burger's ISA, which compelled me to take Shadows, but the ISA didn't turn up so the Shadows faced Ben's Narn instead. Two Scouts and four fighter flights went against two Dag'Kars and four Sho'Kovs. The Dag'Kars e-mined a Scout and did a bit of damage, but by the time they could reload the Scouts had zipped across the table and were behind them. The fighters achieved nothing except to give Ben a couple of consolation VP's when they met the next salvo of e-mines and torpedoes.

Game 2: my ISA versus Greg's Shadows. Mistake 1 was letting the Stalker see the Nolo'Tar, which fell to a couple of well-placed beams. Mistake 2 was sending first a Blue Star and then a White Star into the asteroid belt of doom. After that, the Stalker chased the remaining Blue Star, the White Star chased the Stalker, and the Scout chased the White Star. The White Star failed to do anything useful before the Scout did useful things to it.

Game 3: by now Burger had turned up so my Army of Light faced his Drazi. The Army started by lurking behind the asteroids. Three of Burger's Warbirds moved around one asteroid field; my one Warbird went through the asteroids to engage and actually survived. Meanwhile my Auroras jumped a Firehawk and blew its engines off, leaving it to drift into the asteroid belt of doom. The G'Tal tried to board the second Firehawk, failed due to a No SA crit, and tried to beam it instead - I can't remember now whether that was the shot which scored a flat miss, a good trick with 5AD using Triggy's system but the G'Tal managed it anyway. On the other hand, its secondaries gave a good account of themselves. My Ximm was battered to within one point of its life and rammed the nearest Warbird. And the Firehawk, my assassination target, was finished off just before the game ran out of time.

Game 4: this game was the reason I had to stay Saturday night at the Travelodge rather than get the last train home. So was it worth it? Oh yes!

Against Kenny, my Shadows finally faced ISA, and it wasn't a poxy skirmish, this was all-out war. It was bound to be messy - it was. First blood went to my Young Ship, which got so many hits on the Liandra that I had to use all of my dice. It blew the Liandra into bits, then blew the bits into bits. Then the ISA's heavy squad of Enforcer, Gunship and Carrier came round and got revenge. The smaller Shadows held out, mugged a Blue Star when it finally came out of hyperspace, got rid of the Enforcer and Gunship, then jumped on the White Stars. But both Stalkers and a Scout were lost in the exchanges. Meanwhile the asteroid belt of doom claimed another victim, Kenny's second Blue Star. The White Star fighters made a real nuisance of themselves, helping to break stealth and shields, and eventually the Scouts turned round and got a few of them. The end result took some working out but apparently I won by a tiny margin.

All in all, a great day's gaming against various worthy opponents with various fleets. Photos will be available soon...
