To Aztec or not, that is....

The question. I've always loved the dazzle patter of the Aztec style on Fed. ships. For those that don't know what the Aztec pattern is

After doing some looking around I found this http://www.starshipmodeler.co/gallery15/mr_051712_entlib.html I LOVE the look of the model but ask this question, does Aztec need to be a pattern, or could it just maybe look like different panels on a ship, that may replicate themselves. Closer inspection of the model shows that the pater deviates quite often.

I really like the ship in the link, and I must admit it would be interesting to try and do it on some ships, possibly using pale blue and dark blue and dark greys on the war era shops.

Another possibility is a pull and plug repair so that small sections of the saucer can be replaced without having to repair the entire saucer? Either way it will be a task!

I would imagine that it would be pretty much random. Paint fades due to exposure to light, heat and radiation, so that the ship is not its official colour for very long. Then it takes damage and a few panels are replaced, new panels being the official colour. They fade a bit as well, while the rest of the ship fades some more. So a brand new ship will have a uniform colour while one which has survived a few battles will have a patchwork appearance. You could even dry-brush some black scorch marks, then repaint some panels while leaving others alone, depicting an area which was hit and repaired but they didn't bother replacing or repainting the panels at the edge of the damaged area.

I love the look on the larger scale models, but I wonder if it would still work on the much smaller gaming miniatures? I imagine it would take a lot of brush time to duplicate but could look pretty amaizing if done well.
