Tips for players

Hi,

I think one of the most important tips for players (and GMs) would be the 5 P's - Prior Preparation Prevents Particularly Poor Performance.

Any other tips?

Gun beats sword. (see Indiana Jones)

Armour is your friend.

Never piss off the Navy.

Marines are tougher than you are, every time.

Your ship is worth more than your cargo.

Do not expect to learn from your mistakes, you may not survive the first
one.

The cute little thingies can be as deadly as the big ugly ones.

If it seems like you might get into trouble, you probably are there already.

You can never be paranoid enough....

Always have 1 or 1 escape routes planned out. In this game, yes they will come and hunt you down with bigger, better, and more toys than what the party can ever get a hold of...

You can't run away from your problems forever, but there nothing wrong with a good head start (to paraphrase the old Meatloaf song)

Take care

Feed the GM/refree. Otherwise they might eat your characters.

Leave friends, girl/boy friends at home. It's called social gaming time, not social hour, makeout time. :

With a small group we found it fun to create multiple characters each and run a quick, dangerous adventure.

Nobody gets really attached to the characters (and in Traveller its an adventure in itself just rolling PCs). This means the Ref can kill off a few and the players get accustomed to mortality.

Next session - just start all over with new characters. This tends to streamline things and get people real accustomed to the rules. great for newbies...

Also, consider pre-generated characters - and a fast paced single session game. Character generation takes a lot of time and doesn't always result in a properly skilled group for a given adventure. Plus, the player has less invested - so is likely to be more receptive to things that happen to 'their characters'.

Also, play an NPC or 2 with the party - allows your conversations with the players to be more interactive rather than narrative. Just don't get so chummy you take away the challenge - and let your NPCs face mortality as well.

Found it better to encourage people to play the game instead of just playing an alter-ego.

And seriously,
Don't ever leave your wing man!

Trank spray is your best friend.

Two charges, one to crack the tank one to ignite it.

The port gets angry when you ping ground crew with the your active mains.

Pissed off stevedores load very slowly, even more so when your paying by the hour.

Quiet hobbies are best for spacers..... Or the entire crew must be noisy.

If you don't actually have Pilot skill, don't attempt to land the starship. New landing gear are expensive, and starport landing pads are even more expensive.

When the pin is pulled, Mister Plasma Grenade is no longer your friend.

NPCs. For when you really need to clear out that minefield, and you've run out of rocks.

Pissing off the Zhodani is only permitted if you want to spend the next six hours in a coma, bleeding out of your ears.
