Three free starship deckplans from ProFantasy

Diamondfist

Banded Mongoose
Just a trio of starship deckplans for Traveller from ProFantasy for anyone interested.

http://www.profantasy.com/products/cos3_deckplans.asp

The zip file also has file formats in png, jpg and pdf for those that don't have CC3 and Cosmographer 3.

I notice here that the starships have "classes"; where in the Traveller books are the starship classes mentioned? I looked through the main rulebook, and only have Central Supply Catalogue, Mercenary and High Guard. Is there a list of the starship classes mentioned in any of the books? Thank you in advance!

Not in Mongoose Traveller. They have been left open to use however you want, if you want to label something a destroyer you are free to do so for whatever purpose you see it fitting.

Traveller wiki has an excellent page on starship "types" which is what you are looking for. It has CT sources:

Thanks for the link. I was waiting for some examples of what can be done with CC3. While I like additional plans I'm not really impressed with what they did using a paid product. I expected something more than could be done using a pencil and graph paper.

I thought the same thing, but then maybe the intent was to give them to you as templates, so you could add in your own furnishings and such. That's what CC3 is all about.

But you are right... as presented they are quite plain.

CC3 isn't really about line templates to fill in. (I do that with Paint) It is designed to create the whole enchilada so to speak. Walls, doors, etc.

If they are using this to showcase a fairly expensive product, (~$90) the marketing director needs to find another line of work...

I am grateful to AndrewW and Sturn for responding to my query; I was actually asking for starship classes, not types. I am familiar with the types of starships, e.g. crusiers, destroyers, battleships, etc. I'm not that new to Traveller!

The link for the starship types that Sturn sent is nice, though. It's nice to have them listed in one place.

I was looking into where the names for the ship classes come from, like the downloads from ProFantasy had: Lucifer class, Marava class, and Zhdits class. I also saw the Fighting Ships preview sample on the site that has an Imperial Battle Dreadnought with the class name Kokirrak class.
If the class name is left up to the GM, I can understand that, I just thought there was a book that had a list of the ship's classes.

I agree that the downloads are simplistic, but they are probably thinking "what are you expecting for free?" without actually saying it. Can they be edited?

Perhaps I can direct your eyes to this gifthorse's mouth?

There are plenty of other examples on there of what you can do with Cosmographer. Ironically, if you look at the thread on what do you look for in a deckplan, you will see many of the requests were something like "clear and uncluttererd"

Pretty much up to whoever happens to design that ship. Generally all ships of a given class are of the same design, though some may have been upgraded or converted to other purposes and may mostly be just using the same hull. It is common for the class to be named after the first ship built for that class, though this isn't always the case.

I can't answer them all. Of the above I only know (vaguely) the story behind the Marava. It is (iirc) actually Empress Class, and presumably each ship is named for a past Empress. Of course even in the long lived Imperium TU there are a very finite number of Imperial Empresses. Far fewer than I'd imagine there are existing Far-Traders. So I've always presumed any Empress will suffice. Historical or fictional. I've used a Terran Roman Empress for my own Far-Trader.

EDIT: Ah, you'll note on the Lucifer class the one shown is named Asmodeus (another name for the devil), so Lucifer was the first (imtu the prototype version) of the class (and hence is the class name) and the rest will all be named for a devil (or equally evil deity) in some culture or another mythology.

The other class names that come to mind are the Adventurer class Free-Trader (most well known by the Beowulf), named for fictional or historic adventurers. And the basic Suleiman class Scout/Courier for which I've always presumed Suleiman was the first named, the story I've heard is that each ship is named for a remarkable IISS scout member. In MTU they're named after lost scouts (mia and presumed kia, officially "on eternal patrol").

I'm sure the rest have similar stories, though finding them might be difficult. I seem to recall the CT supp 9 had some in the notes of specific ships.

There are also old CT rules in Trillion Credit Squadron that define what makes a "class" of ship and how far you can change it without it having to be reclassified as a separate class.

I appreciate the effort, far-trader, and thank you for the information. I guessed that the "class" namings was more of an as needed bit of info for flavor, than something that was listed somewhere in the rules. (I'm a bit of a list monger). For something that involved, and there's no official record of the class names, I surely wouldn't expect anyone to go to all that trouble to list them. Thanks to everyone who answered!

Does anyone else have an opinion on the free deck plans from ProFantasy?

You're welcome Diamondfist :)

Well, I've mused on the pointlessness of repeating the grossly over-tonnage (or horribly scaled) representation of the Empress, yet again. The plans show more like 400tons than 200tons. The easy fix (with it's own problems, but better than nothing) is to change the scale to 1m squares shown.

I don't know why anyone would go to the trouble of recreating that so obviously wrong set of plans when it's been known for so long and there are so many corrected fan versions that get it better out there. Even less so when it's meant to help showcase a pricey piece of software. But that's maybe just me ;)
