The Rule book

I'm just saying; Not everyone will come into this game the way we did;, i.e. through buying the first wave of inf boxes and drooling at the minis, and now we're set to the teeth waiting for the "advanced" rules.

Some people will learn/hear of this game further down the road... and they might then make the easy mistake of buying the "rule book" first.

Fair enough comments, and they make a good arguement.

Maybe in future prints of the books MGP could use those spare blank pages at the back to print out some cut out able unit templates. :D Say 2 Infantry and a tank for each of the factions. This shouldn't cost to much and would give new comers to the game something to play with (and look at in the shop).

Oh, it's a fair comment, no question. It's just one of those arguments that I don't get. Like "all starship games must come with a construction system, or they suck": this is an extremely common meme in starship wargames, but I've never understood why. If you can have a fun game with the provided units, then it's an OK game. A construction system might be good too, but it's a question of what that displaces, in both physical rulebook space and in playtesting effort.

Here we're just dealing with rulebook space, since the playtesting obviously needs to get done anyway. But the cards are already published, and in multiple places. A summary table of unit point values and options might be nice, to aid in army construction, but I don't see paying more for cards that I've already got multiple copies of. I guess it is kind of nice in Warmachine Prime, but that meant they had to push off publishing their full campaign system for a year.

Which brings up my final point, that I don't think you want to just publish a smattering of units. Remember all those Wave 1 arguments about why the PLA would clean up against the USMC at certain point values? Now those arguments get codified in the main rulebook. I think if you're going to publish unit cards, you publish all of them; at least, all the ones you've got relatively well playtested. This lets people anticipate future releases, and play with proxies if they want (rather like the Internet release of cards, really). At worst you should go deep rather than wide: six units for two factions is better, to me, than three units for four factions. That lets people who want to test out the system actually get a feel for depth in the game, instead of being forced to play "1 USMC squad and an M1 against 2 PLA squads and a T-99" for the fifth time.

I guess I just wanted to post my view on the issue. I don't think GhostWolf is wrong; I think a lot of people probably will come at it as he says. But I also think a lot of people won't. Maybe I just felt like being a squeeky wheel today...

Gets out the WD40. :)

I was just thinking we have half a dozen pages in the rule book that are just blank, you could easily print out a couple of units for each faction on those pages...

I don't mean to be a dick here... (or maybe I do?) but this is a quote from Mongoose's OWN site for the Rule book:

"This rulebook provides many advanced rules such as battles involving emplacements, air units, artillery, minefields, lots of new scenarios to test your tactical capabilities, army lists, and a complete campaign system."

I don't know what you think... but something is definetly not right here.

The book has a list of how many of each type of unit you can take for your army. That's an army list....from a certain point of view.
What would you call it then? Army design rules? Would that make you think of anything different? Make you more or less likely to buy the book?

OK, I wasn't sure that there were blank pages. (Hopefully I'll be able to check later in the week.) But since we still disagree on which couple of units to put on those pages (3 of 4 factions or 6 of 2 factions), I'm still hearing a little squeekiness :).

Half a dozen blank pages? Really? Wacky...

You know the way I got around this problem is by providing friends with my spare unit cards... afterall you only need one card of each type and I have the spares to do it...

6? :? I have 2.

Sounds like he got one of those early copies. I recieved my book yesterday, and it is top notch with only 1 pic slightly off. It is the one of a unit card, but the writing on the card is perfect and easy to read. Big thumbs up from me, MP! :D

Cordas got ripped off!

Well I bought the book for a mate, as I owed him some cash, I will get my copy over the weekend (I hope if my local TM has restocked it by then). However maybe you lot got ripped off as he has extra free blank pages

Anyway back to part of the original post, I would love to see a shiny metal box for each facion containing a load of unit cards (maybe even laminated cards as they will last so much longer) give one for each unit and leave enough space to add in extras.

But mostly because it's shiny  We all love shiny things!

I made douvle sided copies of the Wave 1 and 2 EFTF cards, thenprinted off the downloadable versions of everything else, and laminated them.

When I can find a place that sells cheap lamis I plan to laminate all my cards, and any print outs I do, I assuming I can convince my mate to bring over his laminator.

I can just see my cards ending up getting wrekced otherwise.

Well check if there's a Stationery Box near you that's open. The one in Bristol had a closing down sale a month or so ago and i picked up 3 packs of 20 laminating pounces which were 95 * 135 mm, just larger than the BF:Evo cards. (I've already used 18 of them, glad I got so many, wish I'd got more)

Other than that, Lidl and Alsi are good places for that sort of thing ocassionally, when they get laminators and other office products in periodically.
