The Return?

Matt what's the hold up on ACtA 3 then? Is it the ship miniatures themselves that you are working on? How about a few previews in Signs & Portants?
I don't mind telling you all now that we were 'this' close last year to snaring Star Trek for CTA, and have a working set of rules (it was great, it integrated all three eras into the same fleet lists, so you could mix and match, say, Excelsior vs. Galaxy-class, leaky shields, cloaking devices, the works).
Ohhhh nooooo!
What a shame! I was laways hoping for a decent ST based game.
This would be perfect!

Well, traditionally Clix don't keep licences long (ignoring Marvel for the moment), so there is every chance it will come up again - and we'll be waiting :)

Ha - that sounds like a plan!
And what I have seen so far from WizKids ST GenCon coverage it does not look that promising either...

I'd would have to disagree the new WizKids Star Trek Game looks like it has a lot of people wanting to get at least the ship models. They look excellent in my opinion and i cant wait to see how they look painted up.

I cant really speak for the game play but it probably wont be as well put together as Full Thrust or some thing along those lines but may well match the fast paced game play of ACtA.

In the meantime.....

Stefan has done a great ST:ACTA mod

Which is also multi generational
True - and I really like it.
But I was looking not only forward to the rules but also to a fully established miniatures range in the a fitting scale.
8)

True

But at least its something we can play now... :)

We all hope for a return of the Star Trek range (FASA days).

But (MATT), if ACTA had a construction table/chart, much like Firestorm Armada, and was generic......... That would open up a whole pantheon of possibilities...
Full Thrust does it, Firestorm is currently being modded, but ACTA would blow them away... :D

Well I'd love to see call to arms come back bassed arround saga of the 7 suns that could be pretty cool....

they're 7 races in that... only downside is 4 of the races kinda like shadows/vorlons in that only have a couple of ship designs...

most interesting -so ACTA 3rd ed is fully playtested and ready to go? Sounds good............

Any chance of a pre-release wider playtest similar to the new Judge Dread rules? Perhaps just the version without the new fluff so as to avoid giving away the new licence?

I don't see any mention of playtesting ... *ducks*

Less ships is probably a good thing, as long as each fleet still has flexibility. I wouldn't want every fleet to become a 1-trick pony like the Drazi or Gaim. That would just re-create the whole paper-rock-scissors effect in tournaments.

A boarding phase with deck plans sounds cool, but I hope it doesn't slow the flow of the game down, or involve bookkeeping. It does sound a little complicated, and a bit "nitty gritty" for CTA, which has always used copious amounts of abstraction to keep the game fast-moving.

Datacards for each ship - yes please, makes my job a lot easier

Open day - sounds good :D

Being done right now :)

Not seeing this as an issue in playtesting right now. Each fleet has multiple options for tactics out of the box. Just deciding _how_ you are going to board a ship takes some thought if you are going to do it properly, and that is if you decide to board in the first place...

I have a personal hatred of book-keeping - you can be assured I will keep it to a minimum.

Without using anything 'fancy' (and there will be plenty of those options!) there are a wide variety of tactics to get your teeth into, especially as we have added a new phase to the game to cover boarding! We have simplified deck plans (which, incidentally, are crying out for us to print up official 'datacards' for each ship) that allow you to track the progress of your boarders as they head towards the bridge - or of defenders making valiant attempts to stem the flood.

Interesting - depends how 'big' the ships are; I can't imagine wanting to keep track of this on something like a 20-ship Drazi or Drakh fleet, but for the 'big ships' it might be quite cool.

Deck plans/data cards are a nice touch for small ish games. One of the best fleet games (in my opinion) was the original Man'O'War as you can instantly see the state of play of your ships, and the damage feels a lot more real than steadily marking off a damage track and occasionally rolling a critical.

Hmmm.... Project 'N'. Speculation caps on, Gentlepeasants.

Cool - sounds good Matt - save me a place for the open day :)

I'm going with Noddy. I don't think there's been a space-based mini game based on that yet? I'm really looking forward to getting a Big Ears fleet!

The boarding phase reminds me of how boarding was important in Fading Suns Noble Armada. It sounds like the same sort of mechanic. It had a ship "map" which the boarders would attack. Sounds very similar to that from the gumf on planet mongoose.

It do hope it is CTA 3 : Fading Suns as that would rock :D. Great back ground and a great game.

The datacards and deck plans are integrated into one (at the moment, 3" x 5") design - you are going to have a little pile of them anyway, rather than keeping a book open to check stats. Oh, and they are washable, so you can mark off damage and such like as you play. Your choice whether you do that or use scrap paper.

However, the only time they are _necessary_ is during a boarding action - and in most games, you are likely to have just one or two of those going on at a time.
