The naming of ships

In a different game I used Gunships "Eat hot anti-protons sucker" and "Kiss your A$$ goodbye" (from the Dirty pair comic by Dark Horse)

I'm tempted to borrow Schlock mercenary (by the outstanding Howard Taylor) naming for my EA and/or Narn
...specifically the O'benn (?) naming and the PD/petey naming
A Ka'Bin'tak called the Sword of Righteous Vengeance, or Sceptre of Irreparable Damage should be pretty cool

Funny names are epic, and lend a new angle to the game to make the everything lighter. We have a player who named his Troligan Cruiser the Don't Shoot Me.

Funny you should say that. I have played a campaign using names of Contact and Special Circumstances ships stolen from Ian Bank's Culture novels. (Scrabbles around to find campaign list)

Command Destroyer EAS No More Mr Nice Guy
Destroyer EAS Just Read The Instructions
Destroyer EAS Gunboat Diplomat
Pulse Destroyer EAS Attitude Adjuster
Dreadnought EAS Unacceptable Behaviour
Dreadnought EAS Just Passing Through
Dreadnought EAS Only Slightly Bent
Heavy Carrier EAS Ethics Gradient
Assault Cruiser EAS Arrested Development
Assault Cruiser EAS Poke It With A Stick
Corvette EAS Awkward Customer
Corvette EAS Momentary Lapse Of Sanity
Corvette EAS Hand Me The Gun And Ask Me Again
Scout EAS Cantankerous
Scout EAS Not Invented Here
Transport EAS Just Testing
Transport EAS Cargo Cult

The Poke It With A Stick racked up quite a reputation, as I recall - it was a Tantalus loaded out with breaching pods, which got on the nerves of pak'ma'ra ships no end.

I was thinking of doing this for my Raiders fleet  ....and still will probably once they are all painted.
My Crusade EA fleet is Currently 57fa at battle and every ship is named.
Every ship is named after a WW2 Soviet warship to keep the Russian federation fleet theme i was going for (in campaigns my Admiral is Fleet Admiral Checkov  ).

Naming ships is easily more fun, if you have any scense of imagination, it could of helps lend a whole nother feel to the game for me at least...

Regarding naming i tend to name every ship i have.

For my current ISA fleet I have Blue Stars named after types of ghosts or spirits

Spectre, Wraith, Krasue

The Nolo'tar escorts are named after flower class corvettes Daisy, Bramble or so on

The White Stars are of course numbered

The Tara'Lin is named Crystal Sphere

White Star Carrier Implacable (Any more will also be I type Carriers)

WS Gunshps are named after lawmen so
Peel, Fielding and Zack Allen

So what should I name my two fast destroyers that pasted your marathon in one volley in the same game? ;-)

Cheers, Gary

Ah, well, that particular ship had been transfered to another fleet. I don't care any more than the USN cared that the Royal Navy sank the USS Brooklyn during the Falklands War.

I vary how I name various ships in my fleets. My favourite named ship at the moment though has to be the EAS GLaDOS (Explorer class). For a science vessel, she can be pretty vicious too ;)

Ah, I see. Charity begins (and stays) at home I see. Maybe that's what I'll name my two destroyers: Charity and Beneficence... ;-)

Cheers, Gary

As far as my EA ships, I remember that my Poseidon is the Saratoga. My Avenger carrier is the Ark Royal. My Nike, being a one-of-a-kind special, had to get a special name - the Enterprise. :)

All of the Marathons are some relative of ancient Greek area city names, ie Marathon. The Omegas are from mythology, just like the show, although I also used Norse myths too. The pair of Warlocks are named for Atlantis and Endeavor and my pair of Victory destroyers are Columbia and Challenger. My Hyperions are a little different and named for places my wife and I have traveled to since we got married. Kinda mundane and all, but it makes them a little special to me. The Apollos are named for space programs, such as Apollo, Genimi, Mercury, Soyuz, etc.

I don't remember the alien ship names are the moment.

Hey, I can't control the fact that Brody (a) can't run a fleet and (b) can't roll dice...

maybe Snakeyes and Boxcars

The spoo is a lie

Usually only name Raid and higher ships in campaigns (rest of them don't tend to live long enough to bother, especially my Sunhawks :) ). Think I might have been tempting fate by calling one of my Hyperions the EAS Alamo mind you ! (actually a canon name btw). My Minbari tend to have more whimsical names than the rest (got a Minbari dictionary from a website), like the Sharlin that translates to Bad Mother :)

yeah...I've named everything, right down to the "half" Patrol point Tethys.

The real trick is going to be naming all of my Dilgar ships. No dictionary, no framework (Greek mythology, US Navy, etc) from which to work. My initial thought was to go through a who's who of dictators, serial killers and other nasties to find names for them all. I'm also considering Naming them for WWII Japanese ships, but that might be in poor taste....

I wuold say choose an empire from the past and them after their stuff. Plenty of vanished nations to choose from...
