The Fair Use Policy

Matt Sprange today on CotI:

The new FUP is basically done, and the TLL will be staying as it is. We are
looking at a new Logo Licence that will allow the use of the OTU in a fairly
unrestricted fashion (well, just one restriction, really!). We are just
mucking about with the wording and the implications, and then we'll be
full steam ahead!

Looks like good news in the near future ? :D

But honestly, isn't that what Matt has been saying here for a couple of months now?

"Almost done, just tweeking the words." or things to that effect?

Sounds like being able to use parts of the OTU with a restriction is new thoguh.

Is this the fabled Open Sector, where we can do stuff and reference the OTU but not do things to the OTU? Maybe the old Foreven Sector "GM Reserve"??????

It's poss-ee-bule, it's poss-ee-bule, Muskee....

But I'll wait a little longer to see rather than sling some random gobbler from Tuareg around.......

"Shamali, tuk-tuk! Temet nioun! Temet nioun!"

(brownie points if you recognise where that comes from. And it involves Touaregs ;) )

Could the Powers of Mongoose please post the same information here for those of us who are not members of the QLI forums?

PS: My bet is that the "one restriction" is approval by MWM.

I did :)

I announced our intentions here long before I posted on COTI. . .

I don't know what the fuss was all about, as it did say what you've already said here.

You did? Argh! How did I miss that?

Um ... can someone provide a link for the needy? :P

Yeah, I've not noticed anything that specific announced here. All I've seen is variants of "we've got something, but we're still sorting out the wording".

Does anyone at Mongoose have any inkling of a timeframe here? Is it a matter of waiting a few days more, or a few weeks (or months??!).

So do you think you'll be posting the revised Fair Use Rules this week? Or next week? Or later?
To which I replied in a way you didn't like and very clearly posted your dislike for it in reply. The result of my post and yours was me getting a warning from Matt via PM and your post being deleted.

I don't recall seeing anything here that remotely resembles what Matt said on CotI. He's not mentioned that they were "looking at a new TLL that would allow fairly unrestricted use of the OTU", that's a lot more detail than I've seen him give here.

Does anyone know where he's said that before on these boards?

Hi guys,

To keep you updated, just about everything has been agreed and sorted with Marc. I just need to sit down and twiddle some files, and then we will be sorted. It will basically break down like this;

1. Fair Use Policy - covers all previous editions of Traveller in all their forms, lets you do pretty much anything you want so long as it is non-commercial and has a disclaimer.

2. The Traveller Logo Licence will stand as it is - feel free to suggest new inclusions for the SRD from both the rulebook and supplements as they come out. This allows you to publish material for the current version of Traveller, for commercial or non-commercial reasons, as you see fit.

3. A new licence is being finalised (just as soon as I can clear some space on my desk - any delays now are all down to me, not Marc!). This will be the Free Sector Licence, which allows you to use any and all OTU references with respect to the Foreven Sector only - again, for commercial reasons or otherwise. This means (so long as you stay within the bounds of the Foreven Sector) anyone would be free to publish OTU material, including references to the Zhodani, the Imperial Scout Service, Third Imperium, or anything else you like.

We will go into more details on this in the next few days but, basically, you will have just about all the freedom you need to create your own OTU material, and publish it commercially, if you so choose. Such material will be considered Open to a degree, allowing people to build upon the work of others, and make it a true Traveller community.

Thanks for clearing this out! :)

However, does that policy mean that non-commercial material for pre-MGT OTU settings is OK as before, while anything OTU for MGT is restricted to Foreven alone? Or could we make free OTU material for any system (including MGT) as long as it is 100% non-commercial?
