The Emperor is murdered! What happens next?

1) The media ignore all other events and concentrate on mo-
re or less wild rumours and speculations about the murder.
2) The law enforcement and intelligence agencies try to find
and arrest the murderer.
3) The Throne Council discusses which of the potential candi-
dates should become the next Emperor.
4) Otherwise life goes on much as usual, the Emperor is too
far away from the everyday life of most subjects to be more
than an occasional focus of gossip.

Who, oh you mean that toothless, puppet maintained by one of the mega corps.

The whole court is a sham, the mega corps make the rules in private and the rubber stamping happens in public.

Now who killed him and what is going to happen now. Was it the Megacorp that "Owned" him, was he trying to buck their control, was he leaning towards another Megacorp.

Was it another Megacorp, which companies are putting up "Heirs". Stock markets maybe going wild as the news spreads. If this was a grab for the throne we could well be looking at another multi sided megacorp war.

Plenty of jobs to be found. Lots of call for mercs if fighting starts and the fighting will continue long after someone else grabs the throne with revenge raids and spoiler strikes.

Plenty of deals to be done, lots of buyers for weapons or supplies when regular trade takes a hit. The Megacorps start attacking each other’s trade and prices go sky high.

Of course it gets tricky as well. Need to get all those Megacorp licenses up to date and be very careful where you use them. Visiting a Syntacorp world while flashing Syntacorp ID is easy and safe. No hassle from the rent a goons and fast track through customs.

Of course if the world has changed hands before you arrive and you are now being hailed by Technobyte gunships while broadcasting that Syntacorp ID will lead to delays, fines and a lot of harassment if they don't just open fire.

Ah the Corporate wars. Fortunes to be made, if you survive.

The CEOs of all the megacorps gather round in their secret star chamber, each asking who was responsible for this. There is an empty seat where the CEO of the biggest mecagorp is supposed to be sitting, a black sash draped over the back.

Once the whole conclave has gathered together and the meeting begins, the star chamber disintegrates - literally, as some advanced-tech orbiting weapon slices through the molecular bonds holding the matter of the building, its furniture and all the members and staff from orbit, cutting a circular well half a kilometre deep by two hundred metres diameter deep into the ground.

At the same time, their secret offworld bank accounts are accessed simultaneously and emptied, and several trillion credits drained. The money vanishes.

Economic chaos ... fails to happen.

I asked because I'm watching World War I in Color.

Oh, well, I'd say the Imperium would essentially split into a dozen or two factions that the Emperor once held in check by letting them each think that one of the others were controlling him are now in open civil war. These factions would be a combination of regional based, military based, and economic based, each being an alliance of planetary governments, corporations, religions and charismatic individuals. Some would be subdued through a variety of means. Others would fall apart due to their own internal struggles. This would allow the players to be major players in the promotion of their own organization or destruction of an opposing organization.

And then things turn war-crime bloody.

Sooner or later, there would be a 4-5 major players, of which the players would be significant individuals on one faction in particular. The players can emerge the real good guys because they stop mass genocide and such.

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

or

Then everyone gets a headache and sad because whiny humans living near the core stayed where Grandfather told them to.
Then the My Little Ponies of Death come swooping in because they still don't like meat sauce on their dinner? (T1248)

Seriously, in MgT? MTU is generally the OTU.
In light of some of the new information in Solomani Rim and Deneb Sector:
Deneb falls to factionalism, then falls to Vargr attacks faster. Spinward Marches is more isolated because of this. Smaller buffer zone when Virus comes.
The Solomani retake Terra and the Rim much faster due to the asteroid sleeper ships.

The Emperor is murdered! What happens next in your Traveller universe? If yours had an emperor.

All manner of war and chaos on the one world this self-styled Emperor ruled. While some of the other nearby independent worlds might see a chance to take advantage of this, most of the others would continue on as if nothing had happened.

The French dither for a while, other nations seek ways that they can make hay out of the unexpected situation.

Paris is wracked by a nasty secret war as Tri-Color, backed by ultra-nationalists in the military, works to eliminate liberals, anti-imperialist and internationalists within the French and colonial governments. It gets rather ugly as even some Deputies disappear.

It might even be possible to run a game that draws a direct parallel between Strephon and Ruffin. Have some French colonies declare independence and add in a few pretenders to the throne and the Third Imperium becomes the Second French Empire.
