The downside of not having an official miniature range

Mongoose
As I prepare to go off to college, and begin making plans on how to take my various miniature wargame based hobbies along for the ride, I have begun to realize how terrible it is that Mongoose didn't decide to make a miniature range(or buy out another range.... ::hint hint: Navwar ::hint hint::). I have willing gamers here in New Jersey that are interested in playing, and dont care much for what scale the minis are in(hence the superior Navwar is our first choice). But here is the dilemma:

Apparently, Navwar is the wrong scale in the US. English gamers seem to favor 1/3000, while US gamers seem to favor a larger scale(1/2400)(or was it smaller?). This wouldn't be a problem normally, but since I'm going to college, I'll have to find a new gaming group that plays VAs(which is in itself a difficult task), and if I do happen to find one, chances are they wont be playing with 1/3000 scale minis. Now I could just man-up and get the 'proper american' scale ships, but if I did that, and then decided to do study abroad(or get based in Germany through the Air Force (if I make it)) I would end up with an entirely wrong scale!

Now I know life isn't entirely about me, but does anyone else feel the same way/have the same problem?

Playing 1/3000 vs the larger (and nicer then navwar for most) GHQ 1/2400 (Mind you, we main land europeans tend to go for 1/2400 more as well... you guys are isolated hehehe) in Victory at sea doesn`t pose that much a problem, as all measuring is done from a central point (or, as we `house ruled`, the bridge of the model) so you can get a game going.

Oh I know the rules aren't that much of a problem, but its the principle of the thing. Two Jap players face off against eachother, one in 1/2400 and one in 1/3000. One says to the other, hey "My Yamato is bigger than yours!"(take that as you will). The other replies "Yeah but mine screws you just as much as yours does mine." (take that as you will). It just looks wrong when the ships are so vastly different in size...

And I thought that the Europeans leaned towards 1/3000? Or is that just the Brits? If thats the case maybe I'll go 1/2400, since that seems to be the favorite scale of americans(unless I misremembered)... but GHQ doesn't make a 1/2400 Surcouf, DOH! And the Panzerschiffe one is a bit... lacking.

1/2400 is popular in the US and Europe, 1/3000 in the UK and (I believe) Australia. That said I know US and European players who favour 1/3000 because the available ranges are far, far greater than in 1/2400, just as I know UK players who prefer 1/2400 because the models are a bit bigger and there's more detail. And then I know a few wargaming hard nuts who have duplicate fleets in 1/2400, 1/3000 AND 1/6000!

(not that I can argue - I have coastal forces models in 1/600 and 1/700 so I'm just as bad :D )

At college I think you're going to have to introduce people to VaS. I doubt you will find many/any that already play. So, you will either be supplying minis for them to play with, or they will buy ones the same scale as yours.

Well one of the local shops near the college I am most likely to attend has Babylon 5, so I wouldn't be surprised if VaS crept in there a bit...

I and all my Colleagues at the MADGamers club Maidenhead Berkshire England all use 2400 ghq. They are easy to get hold of in the UK. I also have fleets in 3000th which I have had from many years ago. Coming to the UK I don't think you will have a problem finding a group in whatever scale you bring over. And as mentioned in many threads on here Navwar and similar are much much cheaper than GHQ so you could buy a few fleets of different nationalities and still have change for your flight home

Navwar was cheaper(unless GHQ is a British company too...). The Pound just reached a record high(according to what I read). It is currently worth two times the american dollar.

Damn crappy failing economy.
Damn crappy failing government.
Damn crappy failing... country.

Nope GHQ are an American company and now is just the right time to buy GHQ ships if you are going to get them. I have placed a large order direct from the USA as they are much cheaper over there. The strength of the Pound means you get more bang for your dollar so to speak.

Someone PM me when the dollar is worth about the same as pocket lint, and then I'll be able to get a battle of the Java sea fleet from GHQ. Even with the dollar in the toilet you will still have to pay VAT on imports over a certain value in the UK however, and the postman will actually charge you for it and not let you have the package until you pay.

you need to source where you buy your GHQ ships from as their postage charges are extortionate if you buy large amounts of metal.hunt around though and you can get a good deal. Don't buy over £50 worth of stuf in one go and you won't pay import charges or vat

Please note God also kills a kitten when the following occurs:

GW disguise an advert as an article in White Dwarf.

Mr Evil buys some childrens toys and then burns or otherwise mutilates them in front of a crying child in order to make terrain.

Low roller doesn't dress as a pirate.

Anyone types the phrase "leet" on the internet.

GW has an inadequately explained price rise.

Whenever Reborn opens his mouth without engaging his brain first.

Whenever someone complains about balance in prority levels in Acta or VaS.

Whenever he feels like it.

While having three possible scales (1/2400, 1/3000 or 1/6000) can b a pain what it means is you have a great deal of frredo of choice depending on bug#dget or time available. If you want to immaculately finish a ship after painstakingly assembling it, you go GHQ 1/2400. If you want to paint it with a spray can and then drybrush the detail on as no one can really tell what it is anyway, you go 1/6000 (yes oggie, I highly disapprove of your 1/6000 scale ships). 1/3000 is a happy and relatively cheap medium. If I want to be able to paint two tournament fleets in a day, I can and have.

Ben would you consider yourself a good painter? Would you consider yourself a fast painter?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it should take me upwards of a month to finish half of a tournament fleet...

I am a horrible painter unless I go VERY slow... very very slow...
