The 4 ton air raft

Air raft's have pretty much always been referred to as being a 4 ton vehicle, but I don't think I have ever seen one drawn on a deck plan that took up that much space. Has anyone ever came up with a reasonable explanation of this? I am rather curious myself. I am also hoping that the civilian vehicles supplement addresses a few air raft designs.

Civilian Vehicles does have an Air/Raft.

But the design says the raft is four tons, not the hanger needed for it. The raft is supposed to be able to carry 4 passengers and one ton of cargo, I can see that on a 3 ton raft. But the design says it is 4 tons of vehicle.

The Air/Raft in Civilian Vehicles has a cargo capacity of 0.025 dTons with a driver and 3 passenger capacity and works out to 0.59259259 dTons.

I for one am in the Hanger size crowd. In that the description of the Air/raft and the commentary in ship construction section don't match.

Sounds like teh air raft from civilian vehicles actually makes sense then.

I have always assumed that the actual air/raft is about the size of a large car (such as a cadillac) and the extra space is for the garage etc. It is WAY more than the 130% needed for a full hangar per MGT, but there you go.

the 4 tons is the space needed for the hanger on a ship. what is not show on the plans is all the support equipment (pumps, tanks, ect.) that are necessary to operate the hanger since it is an airlock. so, three tons for the air/raft and one ton of support equipment and of course the always assumed passage space to get to it.

Hanger space only takes up as much space as necessary for what it is holding, unless you are using the High Guard full-scale hanger or something which is +30%.

why then is there still confusion as to why an air/raft is shown as 3 tons but is listed as 4 tons.

That's not what is in confusion. It's why it takes that much, shown in the core rulebook is the actual tonnage, not including any extra hanger space.

Now that was written before the vehicle books and the one in Civilian Vehicles comes out smaller.
