The 1000d limit came about from an issue of Challenge Magazine. I'm ignoring it as it can (somehow) push off of the ship's mass and no, I don't know have enough physics knowledge to explain it.

I know it has never been part of the text for either and gets brought up more for Jump drives than M-Drives, but I've always wondered if the gravitational 'slope' (gradient, derivative, Tidal forces, pick your term) was a major factor in the performance.
