Terror of the Darklords - Just Arrived!

I just got this through Drive Thru RPG. Reading it now. Great story so far!

Just need to ask, according to one of the sections in the introduction, there's an appendix containing a Giak lexicon? This seems to be missing from the Drive Thru version. Anyway to get this Appendix? Or is it the same one as the Magnamund Companion?

Pete's done a great job on this particular adventure and all kudos to him for building a great story.

Nicely done Pete!
Thanks Wolf! For those potential purchasers out there I've tried my best to emulate Joe's simple, fast flowing adventure style, allowing players to perform some epic deeds and concluding the campaign in a climactic finale. Fortunately Darran has forgiven me for using (and abusing) Master Stormsong as part of the story arc...

The campaign is a memorable introduction for players to the Kai, Sommerlund and neighbouring regions. Each adventure can be easily expanded upon, or even interspersed with other scenarios, to extend its lifespan. Unfortunately there is only so much one can squeeze into a book of this size!

I think you did a bang up job to be honest. It does feel like a Lone Wolf adventure which is great. I think it benefits from the tight Kai Lord focus.

I would love to see a set of scenarios/campaign for a mixed class group though... eg, Kai Lord, Border Ranger, Knight of Durenor, and a Toran Magician as I think eventually (once the class book is released this month) those mixed groups will become the norm for gaming groups rather than just Kai Lords.

What I like about rules lite game is that the products released using such systems can concentrate on the fluff/story/world content and not get bogged down in game balance, creating new feats, etc etc. I've said it before, but I do hope these 'new' rules for LW are a success and it results in a decent set of products coming out over the months/years.

I noticed that too and can't seem to find it. Its not in the multiplayer gamebook rules either. Perhaps something for the guys to release as a free download as it looks like its been cut from the final edit.

Hey Pete,

Honestly it was a great read! And I'm only done with Scene 1! The climax to that scene was awesome, something never seen or done in the original gamebooks (well, for obvious reasons, there was only one Kai Lord in the originals!).

I guess your copy is the actual hardcopy? And it's also ommitted? Well, would be looking forward to the next S&P then!

Will an erratum be released? I realised one of the acts, I think Act3 is missing a section? Or rather the section is missing the header?

And maybe some confusion over Whip and Dagger? I've not done a close reading of that one yet, so I may be wrong!

But having said that, the adventure presented in the book is really epic. I ran a mock run through of the battle at the end of Act1 with 3 Kai Lords and it was crazy!

That's strange. I included it in the submitted manuscript, but it must have been cut for some reason. However, it was little different from the original Magnamund Companion so if you have that you aren't really missing anything.

Why it was removed I don't know. Perhaps it has been earmarked for a future publication. However it is frustrating that whoever chopped the lexicon out didn't check for internal references to it.

As to the whip/dagger confusion in Act 3, that was my mistake. I had obviously meant to write whip, but dagger came out through the typing fingers. Apologies to all.

But a lot of us won't have that....

Yup, it's available for free download under the Project Aon licence.

I remember reading somewhere that the combined works of Heroes of Sommerlund, Sommerlund and Magnamund Beastiary will essentially form a new "Magnamund Companion". So I guess maybe the lexicon will appear in one of those books? *fingers crossed*

Just finished reading the book and I am really impressed. My only concern is the character progression, because it takes characters from 5th to 10 th level. It may be a long series of adventures, but its hardly equivalent to the first 5 lonewolf books, which took a few game years to complete. I would offer 2 or 3 level advances maximum. Also, do the new equipment prices completely override the ones from the main book, because some of the items are vastly different (Quarterstaff was a crown, now its 10 crowns) . It seems to me that since the new list includes a lot of inexpensive items, so the original prices have been increased to make more sense - otherwise a quarterstaff costs the same as a glass of wine. Personally, I am just going to use the new prices since they seem to work much better

I don't understand why weapon costs such vary so much. A broadsword costs 25 times as much as quarterstaff and yet does exactly the same damage.

Weaponskill in quarterstaff suddenly looks very appealing. If you lose your weapon at any point, it is cheap to replace. Of course you would select a broadsword from the starting equipment, find the nearest town, sell it second-hand ('It is unused, must be worth 20gc'), buy a staff for 1gc and fill your belt bouch with crowns!

Thats why 10 crowns for a staff in Terror from the Darklords, seems more reasonable. I was thinking of applying some CS modifiers to make the price relevant:

Unarmed: -4 CS
Knuckledusters/gauntlets: -3 CS
Dagger: -2 CS
Quarterstaff: -1CS
Broadsword: +1 CS if used with two hands
Axe: -1 CS
Battleaxe (25 GCs): -
Spear: -1 CS if used in one hand
Greataxe: +1 CS (two handed)
Greatsword: +2 CS (Two handed)

That does look reasonable and an interesting modification to the rules.

Then again, if I wield a simple short sword and a shield, it would exactly the same as wielding a 2-handed greatsword. Costs 5GC less.

Anyway, this does take place 50 years before Flight from the Dark. This was before a war, so maybe that has bearing on the prices.

Actually its a difference of 10 Gcs (Shortsword 25 GCs + Shield 15 GCs = 40 GCs) but i would rule that carrying a greatsword would add a +2 Bonus to all intimidation attempts. I may even ammend the prices of shields:

Buckler (15 GCS): +1 CS
Shield (25 GCS): +2 CS

Heroes of Magnamund will have a full equipment list containing many items including all weapons. I personally consider that price list to be cannon, though you are free to use whichever you prefer.

Anymore spoilers?

Anyway, regardless of what is said and done, I certainly will be buying Heroes of Magnamund.

until theres another book with price lists in, since each new book seems to undermine the last :)
