Taskforce leaders

Had a 6 point raid game today, and my mate and I got talking about the admiral traits, and how they could be used to represent lesser comanders.

Our line of thinking was this.

Say you are playing a 5pt skirmish game or something and you want to dabble with the admiral rules. Why not each player chose one ship in their fleet as the taskforce leader, and give it just one of the admiral traits. After all, even the smallest group of ships must have someone in charge.

My friend had the concern that letting someone chose freely in a low level game might be broken and came up with the idea of making it semi random. By this he ment each player chose 3 admiral traits that they like, then let the dice decide which one you get out of those three.

We havn't got to try either idea out yet, as the topic only came up towards the end of our game, but they sound like they might be worth a try.

Not sure if the idea could be inclued in a campaign, havn't thought that far, I guess that you could modify the 'new captain' role that most fleets have in some shape or form. After all 'new captain' seems to be pretty similar to the admiral trait 'legendary tactician' anyhow.

To represent the crisis in leadership (and make it less potentially broken), you could have it the other way around: You choose 3 traits for your opponent and vice versa (could be done in secret). Then you each have to take one of the options presented (could be done randomly).

It's like having someone you don't really like in charge but you ain't got much choice.

Just tossing some ideas
