Tactical Space Combat

Mongoose
I have done a quick search, but haven't been able to find anything on point (it may be my incompetence). After a few years of fanstasy RPGing, my group is getting ready to move into a sci-fi game. I played a little traveller in the mid-80s and really like the Mongoose interpretation. However, a couple player in my group are really looking forward to Mayday type tactical space combat. I don't see a Mogoose supplement that fits the bill. (I only own the core rulebook). Am I missing something? If its not outthere, what have other people done to incorporate tactical space combat into their games?

thanks for any help/info.

The Mongoose system is almost identical to the old CT system. You could use the MayDay rules almost completely as written with the Mongoose system.

Acceleration is still acceleration etc.

The one big difference is the length of a turn. In MGT it is shorter, which means the hexes in MayDay will need to be smaller (650km I believe works right). That keeps 1 turn of acceleration at 1G changing your speed by 1 hex per turn.

The hexes are 1,250km across.

Well, you can download my free Traveller style space combat game Intercept and use that. It has everything you need for tactical space combat including a ship design system but you can also simply use the movement or sensor system and handle combat and damage through the Mongoose system. It is designed to let the players decisions affect the outcome to a larger degree than ship stats and die rolls.

Want to swing around the southpole and come at your enemy in his near blind sunward direction? Should you stay in the planet shadow to lower your reflected signature or will your opponent rely on Infrared? Do you risk your repair crew going out on the hull to repair the turrets under thrust and risk them falling off? Can your ship take 5 G's of areobraking and will the crew pass out from G-loc? Silent running with powerplant off waiting as you try to get a track out of that contact or is it merely a decoy? Were you accused of winning by sheer luck last time and want the next game to use the entirely random free deterministic system? Can you go from Earth, land on the moon and back again in less than 15 GTurns of thrust? Can you slip your cumbersome Subsidized merchant past the two orbiting Cutters unseen or should you use the Launch?

Yes, marketing bull of course but you CAN do all of the above and it is free
