Starports

On p59, this book states "Barracks: ...provides a detachment of marines with somewhere to sleep..."

How many marines are there in a detachment? What ranks?

Mssr Bruntlett,

a detachment would depend on the size of the Starport. Detached means away from parent-unit.

Now if this is a modular bay room as Mssr Barnest is saying, then the formula is 1 MARPAX (Marine Personnel) / 2dt.

Well it's two tons per marine, so how many tons is it?
Strangely, Starports uses its own measurement - "Size" but I can't find out what "1 Size" is worth in tons / D-tons.

A Starport barracks costs 2MCr and has a size of "150".

Looking at p51, a warehouse module is listed as having a size of 100 and is capable of accommodating 100D-tons of cargo.

So maybe 1 size = 1 D-ton?

BTW.. what is a D-Ton? :)

Traveller has taken the DTon (defined as the volume of one metric ton of hydrogen slush at a particular temperature) as anywhere from 13.5 to 14.5 cubic meters. If you are mapping your facilities in 1.5m grid, use 13.5 (two floor grid, by two high). If you are mapping your facilities in 1m or 2m grid, 14m3 is slightly more convenient (one floor grid, by almost 2 high).

Also it converts to GURPS and "standard" d20 combat systems.
1.5Mx1.5M grid is very close (close enough) to 5'x5' grid.
It's actually around 4.92' x 4.92' grid.
(again, close enough for miniatures combat)

Can't you stack marines like 10 high?

I think it should read "It's enough space to house enough marines to kick the ass of anyone stupid enough to attack their spaceport and didn't bring a battleship to back them up." Or something to that effect.

Starports Page 42 under the section on "MODULES" explicitly states that a SIZE point is a measure of a module's volume and represents about 14 cubic meters - and is roughly equivalent to one D-ton.

A D-Ton is a displacement ton, the volume of 1000 kg of liquid Hydrogen, actually 13.5 cubic meters, but often rounded in Traveller to 14 cubic meters.

It is the same volumetric measurement used for starships. Not sure why they felt they had to give it a different unit, if it is D-tons, just call them D-tons... Oh well.

Hope that helps!

One thing that I find annoying is that the sample starports don't come with a calculated Cost. Sure, I can spend the time to go through and add up the costs of the various modules, but especially for the Standard SPA starport, knowing how much they cost would have been a big help.

It would be good to know how much a world with a Class E starport is going to have to spend to upgrade to a Class D starport. Yes, I can do that math, but obviously that was already done when the ports were designed for the book and it would have taken ONE MORE LINE of text.

Oh well, guess I will have to break out the calculator!
