(Star Fleet) Special Actions

What are the most common special actions you see people use.?

Is there one special that is always used more than any other.?

The most used one i have come across in Demo's is "Close Blast Doors" and "Boost Energy to Shields", which are used allot by people playing Federation. Klingon players seem to favor "Overload Weapons".

Intensify Defensive Fire, Boost Shields and All Power To Engines by a wide margin.

Reload is obvious for certain fleets although as experience grows we see less Overload.

Some All Hands and some Close Blast Doors but most of our players would rather boost shields.

I think we've played about 20+/- games overall and have yet to see a HET.

IDF and APE by far and away are most common.
Clost Blast Doors and All Hands on Deck follow after that.

We do use HET and Launch Suicide Shuttle from time to time.

All the others, not so much.

IDF with AP2S a close second. APE is falling out of favor with the Lumbering fix in place. All Hands on Deck shows up about every othere game. Outside of that Evasive Manuvers or High Energy Turns pop up just often enough that people know what they area.?

The one lone Marine Raid was absolute ly freaking awsome every team succede and came back. The D7C could have taken the BCG intact if there were rules for it, instead it blew up in the D7s face.

I use Power to shields, overload and reload the most - would use IDF more but I have really stinky luck with it. I've used all power to engines a couple of times - the rest I pretty much never use.

I play federation (in a campaign) and I use overload when I can, which is very rare, boost shields if I can afford to move 6" or less, IDF if I moved over 6" and I don't need to engage tractor beams, engage tractor beams if I need to for a scenario, or in there very rare case I am trying to hold an enemy ship, all hands on deck if I have escalating criticals, reload if I think the game won't be decided by the time I get another shot off (I usually boost shields if I am at close range), high energy turn if I have high crew quality and XP dice, evasive action if I have high crew quality and expect torpedoes (otherwise I use boost energy to shields), and maximum warp now to save ships. I don't think I have ever used closed blast doors, boost energy to shields is almost always better.

As for myself and my local player, we use Boost Shields, IDF the most. Followed by Overload, Reload, All Hands on Deck, and Evasive Maneuvers.

More relevant if you've taken a serious shield critical and don't expect to live long enough to fix it...

It's surprising, in some ways - Close Blast Doors! is probably the most common in Babylon 5 and one of the most popular in Noble Armada.

Those games do not have shields on every ship so Close Blast Doors is the best way to protect yourself from damage. In Star Fleet everyone has shield so peopke will lean toward boosting the shield strength to nullify damage. Once the shieldz are gone then you switch to closing blast doors. Also All Power to Shields actually can restore damaged shields bring hem back to full over a couple of turns.

From what I recall both NA & SF state the shield increase only last for 1 turn, then they go back to the normal level. So how are you bringing them back to full level.?

I'm pretty certain the rules state that you lose any extra shield points over your starting value at the end of the turn. In other words, you would get to keep the bonus shield points that are up to your starting level.

I'd say it'd really depend on your opponent... I'm a big fan of boost shields as the Feds, due to the potential... but I've usually got more important things to do... like a fleet of suicide shuttles around those cloaked romulans... XD

Launch Suicide Shuttles is a good layer of deterant vs Romulans. By the time they decloak you will have a nice little swarm of these pesky things. Keeps them 4" away from your ships in a nice circle so if they get into optimum range you can ram them :D. Also they might get rid of those Phaser's and Tractor Beams for your Drone's / Plasma.

As a Romulan player Reload is my friend. I occassionally use Boost Energy to Shields and All Power to Engines.

Well when i first saw clangers shuttle swarm i did start to panic (because i did not have any shuttles of my own), i was planning to dive bomb into the middle of clangers fleet and try to go blow for blow.

though i loved the idea of the shuttles of doom, i think they would be better if they moved 6 inch's as then they could keep up with the main cruisers etc.

"Ignore those shuttle, as what can they do to my mighty battle cruiser -Booooomm!"- end transmission

I found it interesting there is not special action to increase the targeting accuracy of a weapon system. That could be very handy option. Obviously it would have to have some limitations for balance.

Scouts will help here ;) When they come out

There used to be Concentrate All Firepower in B5 and there is a variant on this in Noble Armada

Well - Noble Armada shields are pretty much universal but I rarely see anyone try Bring Battle Shields Online! - it messes up the ship too much, it's not garuanteed, and it's not actually that much extra protection...

Not sure an 'increased accuracy' action helps that much - phasers are pretty accurate as is, and if firing heavy weapons and able to use a special action, you might as well overcharge the things.
