SST Rule Question

Mongoose
After playing a few games and reading the manual a few times I still unclear on a couple questions regarding the air phase. My group really enjoys the game even though we got into late, and help would be greatly appreciated.

Hoppers - Can you place them on the board at the start of the game? If so I am assuming they are counted as on the ground, and not in the air since air assets come in as part of round 2.

Hover - Is this part of the air phase/ground phase/ or you pick? Can units react to hovering bugs without specialized aa weapons. Would aa weapons have a 20" reaction radius if hovering?

AA - Can units without AA react to Air Units even if they don't have a suitable weapon (such as ready or beat feet)? If they can react, is their reaction radius 20" as stated for AA, or the normal 10"

Thanks!

Right, Hoppers can start on the ground at the start of the game.

Hover is a part of the ground phase. It is considered a special movement mode. The 20" Reaction rule would not apply, since the Hopper is not an air unit at the time. (Keep in mind Hoppers do have the ability to take off and become air units. At that point they use all the rules for aircraft, and are susceptible to the 20" reaction range.)

Yes, they can react, but they wouldn't be able to shoot w/out AA, so MI would basically have the opportunity to try and run for cover. And yes, they would get 20" instead of the normal 10."

Hoppers: You can have them on the board at the start, as ground units. You only need to bring them on in the Air Phase if they start in any flight mode.

Hover: Hover is a special movement type, like the MI's Jump move. Models using this act in the normal phase, not the air phase, and can be shot at and reacted to just like all other ground units.

AA: Any unit can react to air units at 20" range, but only models with AA weapons may shoot at models flying faster than V/TOL speed.

Me too, it's a great background for games. I still pull out my SST stuff from time to time, love the game system, and I put so much time and effort into building and painting the armies I'm not planning on getting rid of them anytime soon.

Can't see the licence getting picked up again, unfortunately. It's an old book and the way they treated film's sequels (first time directors, relatively low budgets) might well put off any serious interest by another company.

all i got left is my skinnie army and a few bits i pop onto ebay now and then... due to RSI i can no longer paint, so all i use is stuff ive painted in the past or prepaint minis now.....

SST was a great game sytem, and a waisted sytem...
