Space 1889

G. K. Zhukov

Banded Mongoose
If at all possible, please MGP, try and get the license (from Frank Chadwick I think?)!

And please make it a cute full-colour book! :P

With quite a bunch of supplements!

Would asking for S1889 miniatures be too much?

I thought Frank Chadwick was still publishing Space 1889?

Daniel

Last I checked, the Heliograph Society was.

Thats it, I could not remember their name off the top of my head.

Thanks AKAramis.

"Under an agreement with Frank Chadwick, Heliograph has reprinted all of the GDW Space: 1889 titles with the exception of Temple of the Beastmen." (source)

Frank was going to release an updated version of the Soldier's Companion sans the Space: 1889 elements but I never saw that it came out.

Thought heliograph were dead and buried? Im glad theyre not but theyre 1889 page hasnt been updated in a while...

"Space: 1889 books will remain in print and available from Heliograph until the license is acquired by someone else." But only one book wasn't done through POD so no idea how long stocks will last.

No more books for Space 1889 from Heliograph, nor their fanzine TRMGS. They learned that selling reprints of a game that never sold well in the first place was not enough to keep a company growing. See their News page for more info (back around 2002 IIRC).

They released some others rpgs and a book of short stories, but Zeppelin Age still isn't out.

Perhaps a better track would be for Mongoose to do a new steampunk setting...make their own martians and base space travel on something like Verne-like cannons (an anti-inertia device for the crushing accelleration is no less unscientific than an aether flyer), and place it earlier...perhaps in a world where the US Civil War ended in a tie and both the Yankees and Confederates are in a 5 way struggle with Britain, France, and Russia for a swamp world of venus.

Like R Talsorian's "Castle Falkenstein" in fact?

Space Punk/ Steam Opera? :)

Some combination of those would be cool. Or just take something like Space:1889 with Space Opera so it'd have a the steam/victorian theme but will well thought out like SO was.

Or even Space:1889 w/Aftermath and have a post holocast and do an "After the Aliens Have Landed" type of game with a big tip o' the hat to HG Wells.

There have been several interesting graphic novels that used steampunk in the last few years. One (the name escapes me) had the british empire taking the martian spacecraft back to mars in retaliation.

And then of course there is Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlmen...the graphic novel being quite superior to the movie (although the graphic novel is a bit mature for younger readers.

Perhaps that should be their next project: being able to play victorian characters such as Nemo, Dr.Jeckyll or the indomitable Sherlock Holmes.

Really? That sounds like a great concept. The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire......especially if they expand into the stars.

I'd love to know the name of that book.

Yes, the interactions between Mr Hyde, the Invisibile Man, and Ms. Parker did get a bit rough.

Of course, Ms. Parker and Allan Quartermain did get a bit naughty there. Those woods will never be the same again.

Sherlock Holmes in Orbit. Captain Nemo's new sub would be an aether sub/ship. Throw in some Dracula in Space action and a bit of Fu Manchu and his ambitions to start a base on the moon.

So many possibilities.

Exploding Goat Games is working on something victorian, Dept. 666.

Wish they had a bit more info on the product. It might fall into this general category.

Come to think about it, Hiromoon was doing something like this on EvoCommand (
http://forum.evocommand.com/viewtopic.php?t=934) that was a nicely done War of the Worlds set of rules/ideas.

He's put the info up at:

http://zupandevelopment.com/our_products.aspx

Down at the bottom called War of the Worlds: Evolution.

There is a novel which though set in 25th Century with the British Space Empire it would work well with Space 1899. All British Empireness and moustaches.

It is Space Captain Smith (I think it is by Toby Frost). I would recommend this fun novel to anyone.

Actually I think Nemo should be the space pioneer--after all he appearently can create endless energy from sea water...turning that into a rocket propulsion would be simple.

Verne also created the less popular Robur The Conquerer who invents powered flight and even a craft that flys, moves the ground, and under the water.

Dracula would be a great concept---instead of his slaying the crew of a sailing ship on the way to england, he devours a spaceship bound for mars with PCs on the menu.

Mongoose might even try getting the rights to Extraordinary Gentleman. Mr.Moor might object (he hated the movie...or any movie on his work for that matter), but they could be getting movie liscence..
...might want to avoid too strong a link to the graphic novel anyway to avoid having to create a "death by buggery" feat to explain Hyde dispatching the Invsible man in a darkly humorous, but terrifying manor in Vol.2

Hello!

A friend of mine pointed me over here: I wrote Space Captain Smith, so I'm glad people are liking it. (There is a sequel next month but I'm not going to labour the point being new and all).

Anyhow, I can distinctly remember reading Space 1889 about 10 years ago. I did try to find it 1-2 years back, and ordered it off Amazon, but it was never delivered - apparently the quality of the copy wasn't good enough for Amazon. Hopefully this was a one-off, as I gather modern POD is quite good.

It was a really good book - I never played the game but the setting was just right. So I'd happily add my voice to seeing a new version of Space 1889 or anything along those lines. Given how popular Steampunk has become, it could be a good idea.

I see that the Right Honorable Toby Frost has made an appearance in the Gatehouse Gazzette.
