Sorry guys...

Banded Mongoose
...but I've had it with RQ/Legend and Glorantha.

I've been a fan since the late 80's and I own practically everything from RQ3, MRQ1 and MRQ2. Now, I have to rebuy stuff again, and there are no cool adventures to be seen on the horizon...

And Glorantha... With RQ3 it was getting more and more complex and forbidding. Lots of do's and don'ts and lots of self-proclaimed Gloranthan scholars shoving their version of the truth down each others throats. I was genuinely happy with MRQ and the take on the Second Age. But now that's dead in the water. Again...

With the transfer from MRQ2 to Legend, and away from Glorantha I must say that I've had it. So, for my playing group, it's back to old-school AD&D (1&2e) and the plethora of settings and ready-made adventures for that game.

I bid you farewell, and hope that your games will be great. Our games are, and we're having a ball with our old TSR books :)

Ciao.

Thats a shame. But you don't really have to re-buy anything, Legend is just a re-badge of MRQ.

Exactly - it sounds like you have plenty of RQ/Glorantha material, and if you're playing AD&D you obviously don't need the game to be currently supported, so...

AD&D is currently supported by the OSR community. I just downloaded a new adventure module Of Hunger and Lies (OSRIC/AD&D) from DriveThruRPG recently.

Wizards of the Coast recently announced plans to reissue the original AD&D rulebooks by Gary Gygax this April. It looks like a good time to be a AD&D fan. :)

The most egregious of these scholars being Greg Stafford himself and his endless "gregging" of Gloranthan history. But, it is his to "greg."

But ever has it been thus, the uneasy grafting of RPG rules onto Glorantha and vice versa has always been a difficult surgery, one whose ligatures have come apart often in the history of the game. This haphazard graft is so deep it is almost a feature rather than a bug. I think that's why so many campaigns I was associated with were set "off the map" in East Ralios and elsewhere, so you could use the creatures and concepts without fear of being swept away by an "official" retcon. And undoubtedly this is why Mongoose decided to settle in the much-less-fleshed, more unknown Second Age.

Runequest the Game always had a bronze age, ancient sense to it. A lot of that was based on the "feel" of Glorantha, but not all of it. Some of it was built right into RQ. And for all its terrific flexibility, D&D always had a medieval feel, much undoubtedly driven by the Cleric class.

But without meaning to seem arrogant, if you like dark, crunchy Swords & Sorcery play without a lot of arbitrariness and abstraction, if you like play based on objectives rather than monster bountyhunting and dungeon trespass, I think you may come back to the Legends ruleset.

Never was a fan of Glorantha, but I love Legend (with Elric).
For the record, I also run Pathfinger (a DnD 3.5 derivative) and enjoy running that too.

Each to their own but i hate levels, classes, hit points that accumulate, combat and magic in the d20 world, so going back to AD&D seems like a backward restricting step to me.

I love the Runequest apporach, really loke Glorantha and use it in slices with my game.

I might jump to RQ6 when it is done but the underlying mechanics of RQ have been close enoguh that all fo the old material, adventures are pretty usable...

I wonder if your problem is with scale. Runequest in all its forms is never going to be the size of a d20 game, nor have its resources...

Maybe its not the game, it you!

:)

This.

I'm not sure how anyone can return to D&D from RQ...maybe to WW or Savage Worlds, or even a D20 OGL like True20, but to D&D?

Just can't see how it can be done. A bit like going from Win7 back to DOS... :D

Funny, I experienced a similar thing but in the opposite direction... after years of AD&D and D&D 3e and 3.5e and a brief stint with 4e, the inanity of the 'edition wars' pushed me away and I sought out the RQ goodness of my youth... which brought me to MRQ2.
Of course now there's some movement in RQ as well but - unlike d&d - I'm not picking up a waft of 'shameless money-grubbing' surrounding this.

I started off with basic d&d and cheerfully followed through even eventually to 4e but the power cards put me off.

Had heard about runequest picked up the 3rd edition but never got into any games save for a club based one evoled about thieves world which they later used a varaint to create their own game system.

Anyway a friend runs runequest 2.0 and that led to my interest in Mongoose's version after tip toeing around with Traveller.
Not a fan of the Second Age but that didn't stop me picking up some Glorantha books but Legend had caught my interest and the fact its so portable is a bonus especially after I bought the Pathfinder core rulebook and try to avoid putting my back out every time i pick it up (Sorry but its true and yes I do have the pdfs just nothing portable enough to read them other than at home)
Anyway as i understand it that rerelease of the 1st edition ad&d is limited to the US and Canada, have they corrected that bit of detail?

In regards to the creator of this thread is there no chance you can't grace your players by running the Glorantha of the 3rd age using what rules you currently have?

As i understand essentially its the same system used by Legend its just that Mongoose can no longer publish anything specifically gloranthan any more but should be no problem to you?

In any case I hope your adventures with ad&d go great and please remember that doesn't mean you can come back to visit once in a while!

Something I'd like to point out here.

The Legend engine has no dependency on the Glorantha setting. In fact, you can pretty much run any setting with Legend, with a few modifications and alterations to fit your setting. Nothing in Legend requires you to run any games in Glorantha - though you could: it just seems a waste of time doing so - and basically you could run any game using just the Legend Core Rulebook.

Mongoose designed Legend for versatility and ease of play, and to make it appealing to raw beginners and veteran gamers alike. I'd say that they've struck a pretty solid balance in this respect. Considering that I've often found it hard to approach RuneQuest because of the Glorantha trappings, yet I've embraced Legend with a passion I had previously reserved for Traveller and White Wolf's World of Darkness Storytelling system, I'd describe my journey here as the reverse of the OP - the moment Legend came out, I jumped in.

Actually, since the moment Mongoose made the announcement last year, I have waited to jump in. :)

OS wars meets edition wars! Oh no!

Just wait till we get started on Vi vs Emacs!

I don't really distinguish between the various d100 games - I'm happy to use stuff from Basic Roleplaying and older versions of Runequest with Legend. And sometimes when I want to resolve an incidental fight quickly, I use the simplified combat system from OpenQuest rather than the full Legend system. I don't think the mechanics of these games are so different that you can't mix-and-match the bits that you like. I'm sure that Loz and Pete will do a good job with RQ 6 over at Design Mechanism too and that will be yet another resource to plunder for ideas.

The major attractions of Legend to me is the OGL - it lets me get in and build my own custom version of the game. We now have three d100 variants released under the OGL - OpenQuest, Rennaissance, and Legend. (There's also GORE, but I'm not sure about the legality of that release...and there's some stuff in the SRD for MRQI that might still be open - just not the Glorantha specific content). That's a wealth of material that you can use to build your own custom house system if that's something that takes your fancy.
