Has a consensus been reached on the actual way to interpret this? (At the risk of dusting off an old thread.)
My interpretation (and question) is as below (based on comments from ResslynHalvik and others:
- At least one airlock per 500dT (or part thereof) - minimum, mandatory
- Per 100dT of hull volume you get 1 airlock at a zero credit cost - maximum, optional
- Per 100dT of hull volume you get 1 airlock at a zero dTon cost - maximum, optional - THIS IS THE QUESTION. IS THE VOLUME FREE OR ASSUMED INCLUDED?
To clarify the bit I'm puzzling over: Let's say, for example, we make a 300 dTon ship. It gets one airlock free of Credit or dTon cost (although I can't find an actual source to cite this, sadly). We'll call this Airlock 1.
It must have one airlock minimum (because of the one per 500 dTons - very clear) (Airlock 1)
It may have up to three 'normal' airlocks (because of the one per 100 dTon rule). One might read HG2022 page 58's "assumption" to mean it
must have three. (Airlocks 2 & 3)
Airlock 2 & 3 have no Credit cost for their installation (HG2022 page 25)
BUT - do Airlock 2 & 3 (which might be mandatory, depending on interpretation) have their cost of 2 dTons each or not? (See citation HG2022 page 25 below).
Sources for each point above:
CRB2022, page 152
"A ship has at least one airlock per 500 tons."
Very clear, this is a minimum though more allowed.
HG2022, page 25 (Step 13, final design)
"A ship may have one airlock for every full 100 tons at no additional expense. Additional airlocks may be purchased as described in the Spacecraft Options chapter."
Clear this is a maximum per dTonnage. "No additional expense" very much seems clear about Credit cost. Is not clear if the "expense" does or does not include dTonnage - could be interpreted either way.
The "Spacecraft Options" chapter referred to states (HG2022, page 58)
"ADDITIONAL AIRLOCK
A ship is assumed to have one airlock for every full 100 tons or part of. However, additional airlocks of any size may be added to a ship.
Airlocks consume a minimum of two tons and cost MCr0.1 per ton. Larger airlocks can be used for cargo bays."
This contradicts the previous entry in HG2022 somewhat; page 25 says "MAY have one per 100 dTons", while page 58 says "assumed to have one per 100dTons". Page 25 means "optional", while page 58 implies the airlock
is present (effectively mandatory).
The cost (in Credits and dTons) mentioned on this page apply
specifically to Additional Airlocks - so it doesn't apply to the basic "one airlock per 100dTons" which is assumed, or mandatory (depending how one interprets page 25 or 58). So for the point I'm pondering, this last bit is not relevant.
The ship "stat-blocks" never mention airlocks unless they're specific or unusual, e.g. cargo airlocks.
The deckplans are a bit "artist's impression" so I don't think we can use them as evidence.
